House approves resolution condemning Israeli decision to expel Arafat

Nicosia, Oct 9 (CNA) The Cyprus House of Representatives, during its plenary session unanimously approved here Thursday a resolution on the latest developments in the Middle East, in which it unreservedly condemns the Israeli governments decision to deport Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.

The resolution, describes the decision as illegal and provocative, stressing that its implementation will only lead to further bloodshed and unrestrained worsening of the already explosive situation in the region.

The issue was tabled for debate by deputy and honourary president of the Movement of Social Democrats EDEK Vassos Lyssarides.

House President Demetris Christofias, speaking before the plenary, said the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus cannot remain indifferent to what is going on in the immediate neighbouring region during the last weeks and especially last few days.

Watching with deep concern the developments in the Middle East, which all the more threaten to obstruct every peace effort in the region, the House condemns the recent Israeli raid on Syrian ground the resolution said noting that it is a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of a neighbouring country, as well as the UN charter. At the same time, it may lead the wider region into a general confrontation.

The House condemned every act of violence, where the innocent victims are the peoples of the region and called on Israel, which is the occupying power in the Palestinian territories, it said, to withdraw without delay any decision to expel Yasser Arafat and refrain from any threat against his security and physical integrity.
