    United Nations, Sep 24 (CNA) -- President of the European Council, Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi reiterated EU's willingness to accommodate the terms of a Cyprus settlement in line with the principles on which the EU is founded.

    New York, Sep 24 (CNA) -- With Rauf Denktash being the representative of the Turkish Cypriot side there is no possibility for a Cyprus settlement, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, told the press here yesterday.

    Answering a question on the possible monitoring of the ''elections'' in the Turkish-occupied north, Papadopoulos said the issue is what observers could do, adding that fraudulence has already taken place since thousands of settlers have been included in the electoral list.

    Replying to another question Papadopoulos reiterated the Greek Cypriot side's will for a Cyprus settlement before May 1st, 2004, when Cyprus will become a full member of the EU.

    Nicosia, Sep 24 (CNA) - The Cyprus government welcomed a statement here Wednesday by European Council President Silvio Berlusconi on Cyprus, made within the framework of the UN General Assembly.

    Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said he welcomes Berlusconi's statement ''that the EU will continue in every way efforts and help the Secretary General in solving the Cyprus problem, so that an overall, viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem is found, based on UN resolutions''.

    Nicosia, Sep 24 (CNA) - A memorandum of understanding was signed in Nicosia on Tuesday between the Baltic International Maritime Council (BIMCO) and the Cyprus Department of Customs and Excise, establishing an anti-drug smuggling agreement.

    Zeta Emilianidou, Director of the Cyprus Customs and Excise Department, and Ove Tvedt, Deputy Secretary-General of BIMCO, signed the agreement.

    Spokesman says wanted changes to Annan Plan within its framework

    Nicosia, Sep 24 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said the changes the Greek Cypriot side wishes in order to improve a Cyprus settlement plan proposed by UN chief Kofi Annan are within the framework and the philosophy of the plan, while the Turkish efforts for changes are far from it.

    ''The issue of balance (within the plan) will be taken into consideration'', the Spokesman said, adding that ''what we are pursuing is not to remove rights from our Turkish Cypriot compatriots''.
