    Washington supports Annan peace plan for Cyprus as the only basis

    Washington, Jul 18 (CNA) -- The Annan peace plan is the only basis for negotiations for achieving a solution to the Cyprus problem, US State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher has said.

    The US official was replying to a question whether Washington recognise any other plan other than the Annan plan for solving the Cyprus problem, following the latest moves of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, who has rejected the UN chief's peace plan.

    London, Jul 18 (CNA) -- An early day motion tabled by four Labour MPs before the House of Commons urges the two community leaders in Cyprus and those who have an influence on them, including the British government, Turkey, Greece, the USA and the EU to redouble their efforts to restart talks at the earliest opportunity so as to ensure a just and lasting settlement is reached to enable Cyprus to join the EU as a single sovereign state in May 2004.

    Australia reappoints special envoy for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jul 18 (CNA) - Australia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Downer has announced that the country's Special Envoy for Cyprus Jim Short has been reappointed for another 12 months, until 30 June 2004, noting that Short's ''main responsibility will be to encourage continued discussions by all parties and the early resumption of efforts'' to reach a Cyprus settlement.
