    Nicosia, Jul 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus' accession to the EU does not mean that we shall give up our sincere efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has stressed, noting that ''on the contrary, we now feel that it is all the more imperative to multiply our efforts to reverse the tragic division of our country in a united Europe.''

    Larnaca, Jul 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has expressed the belief that at the moment there are no prospects for the resumption of Cyprus talks, but underlined that the Greek Cypriot side's will is to achieve the resumption of talks, on the basis of the Annan plan, the soonest possible, so that a reunited Cyprus will join the EU in May 2004.

    Cypriots in Britain denounce crime against Cyprus

    London, Jul 14 (CNA) -- Cypriot community in Britain called upon British Premier Tony Blaire to use his influence on the international community to achieve a change in Turkey's stance towards the Cyprus problem so that the country complies with the international law and the relevant decisions of the United Nations regarding Cyprus.

    At a rally organised here yesterday, Greek Cypriots as well as some Turkish Cypriots gathered together to condemn the military coup of 15 July 1974 and the Turkish invasion to Cyprus five days later.

    President of the Cyprus National Federation in Great Britain Haris Sofoclides, accompanied by Cypriot veterans of the Second World War, stopped at the Prime Minister's residence, where a letter was handed out, asking for further international pressure on Turkey.

    Eight British MP's representing all three parliamentary parties as well as three British MEP's expressed during the gathering their support for justice in Cyprus.

    Main speaker at the rally, Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides expressed the readiness of the Greek Cypriot side to start negotiations on the basis of the Annan peace plan.

    Nicosia, Jul 14 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    On Tuesday (July 15) and Wednesday (July 16), fine weather is expected, although local mist patches and low cloud will form, mainly overnight.

    Winds will be southwesterly to westerly, gentle to moderate in the morning, turning to moderate and locally fresh in the afternoon. Strong breezes are expected locally over the south coast, in the afternoon. Gentle southwesterly to northwesterly breezes will prevail overnight. The state of sea will be generally slight to moderate but locally in the south it will be temporarily up to rough by late afternoon.

    The maximum temperatures recorded were 37 degrees Centigrade inland, around 31 along the south and east coasts, and around 29 along the west coast and over the mountains. Minimum temperatures were 19 to 21 degrees inland and along the coasts, and around 18 degrees over the mountains.

    On Thursday (July 17) and Friday (July 18) no significant change in weather conditions is expected.

    Cyprus House ratifies Accession Treaty unanimously

    Nicosia, Jul 14 (CNA) -- The 56-member Cyprus House of Rperesentatives ratified here today unanimously the Accession Treaty of Cyprus and the other nine EU acceding countries. Cyprus is the only country among the 10 acceding countries, which does not ratify the Accession Treaty with a referendum.

    Nicosia, Jul 14 (CNA) - Head of the European Commission Delegation to Cyprus, Adrian Van der Meer, said today that the only way forward to finding a settlement of the Cyprus question is the Annan Plan, which addresses the core issues of the problem.

    However, he told reporters after meeting Interior Minister Andreas Christou that the EU welcomes any confidence building measures, noting it was up to the parties to decide.

    Nicosia, Jul 14 (CNA) - The National Council authorised Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos to handle the issue regarding Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash's letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on his proposal to reopen the Nicosia Airport.

    Undersecretary to the President Christodoulos Pashiardis told reporters after the extraordinary meeting that the Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, ''thoroughly discussed the contents of the letter which Denktash had sent to Annan and the Secretary-General conveyed to President Papadopoulos.
