Synod calls for action to prevent recognition of occupation regime

Nicosia, May 13 (CNA) - The Synod of the Church of Cyprus calls on the government to act in all directions to avoid either direct or indirect recognition of the Turkish occupation regime and consolidation of the current unacceptable situation on the island, and in order to meet the goal of returning all the shrines in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic to their legitimate owner, that is the Church of Cyprus.

In a press release issued after a meeting today, the Synod notes that it ''understands the wish of the refugees to visit and see their homes and properties, to pray in the shrines of their villages or towns and the graves of their parents'', as well as the wish of non-refugees to pray in the churches in the Turkish occupied areas.

''This constitutes the maintenance of the recollection and the enhancement of the wish to return'', the Synod notes.

However, it expresses regret over the ''unacceptable behaviour'' of Greek Cypriots who cross the divide for recreation purposes and calls on them ''to realise their responsibilities towards their country and our ancestors''.
