Christofias described Erdogan as a ''contemporary politician'' and said the Turkish Prime Minister, who is conducting an illegal ''visit'' to the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus here Friday, should say ''mea culpa for his country and realise that Cyprus must regain its independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty through a bizonal, bicommunal federation solution''.

European diplomat says reunited Cyprus a dream to come true

Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) - Head of the European Commission delegation in Nicosia Adriaan Van der Meer said today that the dream of a reunited Cyprus would come true soon, adding that the accession of the island to the EU provided a new dynamism for a settlement.

Speaking after an event organised by the University of Cyprus, Van der Meer said ''we feel that through the European process, through the new dynamism, through the new catalytic incentives which are now playing a role that this almost automatically will have a positive effect to solve the Cyprus issue''.

''I am sure it will not be too long any more before the dream of a reunited island joining the Union will come true'', he added.

Asked if a settlement of the Cyprus problem was close, Van der Meer said ''no, for the moment you know how the situation is, we have new dynamism, new developments, we have seen the crossings, this has a very positive impact, this will lead to change and we have to work very hard to get the process back on track again''.

Invited to say what his message to the Turkish Cypriots was, Van der Meer said it is ''one of solidarity, of understanding, of full recognition and that we know that they want to become part of our family as soon as possible''.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

Turkish Premier: Greek Cypriots must reciprocate

Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has called on the Greek Cypriot side to reciprocate to moves Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has made in the past few weeks.

Erdogan, speaking at the checkpoint of the Turkish Cypriot regime near the buffer zone during a one-day illegal visit, claimed that Denktash has a constructive approach towards the resumption of UN-led peace talks.

Asked by CNA to comment on recent developments on the island, the Turkish premier, speaking through an interpreter, said ''I value these steps at the 'border' as positive steps, I also value Denktash's proposal to open the closed area of Varosha to be utilized, made on 2 April, as a very positive step as well.''

Erdogan was referring to the partial lifting of restrictions on freedom of movement Denktash had imposed since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded Cyprus.

''All these steps towards a solution should also be counter-replied by the Greek Cypriot administration of south Cyprus as well,'' Erdogan said, adding that ''we want this beautiful island to be an island of peace, we want the first quarter of the 21st century to establish peace, let our steps towards peace continue and make Cyprus an island of peace.''

Invited by CNA if he would persuade Denktash to return to the negotiating table, Erdogan claimed that Denktash ''is already in a positive attitude, as long as both sides have an understanding.''
