Cyprus Foreign Minister in Rhodes to attend EU meeting

Nicosia, May 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Georgios Iacovou is in Rhodes to participate in an informal meeting of European Union Foreign Ministers, to which ministers of acceding and candidate countries have also been invited.

The two-day meeting will also take the ministers tomorrow to the Greek island of Kastelorizo.

Trade unions say joint gatherings sensational

Nicosia, May 2 (CNA) - The leaders of the Cyprus Workers' Confederation (SEK) and the Pancyprian Federation of Workers (PEO) described as ''sensational and touching'' the response of the Turkish Cypriot workers and their trade unions to the call for joint celebrations for the 1st of May.

The General Secretaries of SEK and PEO, Demetris Kittenis and Pampis Kyritsis, told CNA that with the easing of restrictions on the free movement of persons in Cyprus and after the announcement by the government of measures to support the Turkish Cypriots, contacts have increased between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot unions.

Government brands "arrests" of G/C in occupied areas "illegal"

Nicosia, May 2 (CNA) The illegal arrest of Greek Cypriots by the occupation regime shows that it still prevents movement, Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides said here today.

The regime illegally arrested a total of 21 Greek Cypriots, according to the Turkish Cypriot press. Eighteen of the Greek Cypriots are being held because they crossed to the occupied north from an area other than a Turkish Cypriot control point and another three because they allegedly tried to steal the bell of their occupied church in Spatharico village. The church bell was in a storage area while the church has been turned into a mosque.

Spokesman Chrisostomides said all necessary representations are being made while President Tassos Papadopoulos has shown personal interest to free the Greek Cypriots "detained" by the Denktash regime.

Chrisostomides referred to the arrest of the Greek Cypriots who wanted to take with them the abandoned church bell at the church in Spatharico village. The Greek Cypriots were in the occupied areas with their permits but were detained when they returned to the Turkish Cypriot control point.

This shows how bewildered the occupation regime is towards the peaceful exchange of visits by Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, he added.

We consider these arrests illegal and all necessary representations were made and the President of the Republic has shown personal interest to free the arrested Greek Cypriots, Chrisostomides said.

He called on all Greek Cypriots to be extra careful during their movement in the occupied areas not just because of the possible arrests but also because of the existence of landmines and other dangers, which might undermine their personal safety.

CNA and EANA organise seminar in Cyprus

Nicosia, May 2 (CNA) - The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) and the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) are organising a seminar on ''News and Telecom Markets - New Business Opportunities''.

The two-day seminar, which begins on Monday in Limassol, is addressed to the presidents, general directors and other senior staff of European news agencies but also interests the wider public as this year it focuses on mobile telephony.

In a press conference today, President of the Board of Directors of CNA Charilaos Papadopoulos said the organisation and hosting of the seminar in Cyprus offered the opportunity to the members of European news agencies to obtain an on site briefing regarding the Cyprus problem, the preparation for Cyprus' accession to the EU and the economic, social and cultural life of the island.

The seminar will be attended by 23 EANA members, including French AFP, German DPA, Russian ITAR-TASS, Italian ANSA and Spanish EFE, as well as other large news agencies such as the Athens News Agency (ANA).

Discussions will focus on news agencies and telecommunications, how news items, useful information and photographs can be transmitted through mobile telephony and WAP systems.

CNA and the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) are at the final stages of cooperating in this sector, in order to provide a direct service to mobile phone users.

Papadopoulos thanked CYTA for its support, especially the sponsoring of the seminar, in which the Authority will be participating.

During the press conference, CYTA's spokesman Paris Menelaou explained the potential of transmitting data through third generation mobile phones by using the GPRS system, while CNA Director Themis Themistocleous referred to the facilities offered especially for reporting through the new system.

The seminar is also sponsored by Cyprus Airways, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, the Bank of Cyprus and KEO.
