    US support UN initiative on Cyprus

    Washington, Mar 1 (CNA) The US has expressed strong support for the latest UN initiative inviting the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides to a meeting in The Hague to tell the Secretary General whether they intend to put his peace proposal to separate and simultaneous referenda for approval.

The new ministers are: Minister of Foreign Affairs : George Iacovou Minister of Finance : Marcos Kyprianou Minister of Interior : Andreas Christou Minister of Labour and Social Insurance: Iacovos Keravnos Minister of Defence: Kyriacos Mavronicolas Minister of Justice and Public Order: Doros Thedorou Minister of Education and Culture: Pefkios Georgiades Minister of Commerce,Industry and Tourism: George Lillikas Minister of Health: Constantia Akkelidou Minister of Communications and Works: Kyriacos Kazamias Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment: Efthimios Efthimiou Undersecretary to the President is Christodoulos Pashiardis while Kypros Chrysostomides was appointed Government Spokesman and Marios Karoyian was appointed Director of the President's Press Office.

    Nicosia, Mar 1 (CNA) A total of five new deputies will enter the House of Representatives, replacing those who became ministers and the President of the Republic.

    Marinos Sizopoulos of the Social Democrats Movement, Fitos Constantinou of the Democratic Party, and Adamos Adamou and Andreas Christou of left-wing AKEL become members of the House of Representatives, replacing Doros Theodorou, Marcos Kyprianou, George Lillikas and Andreas Christou, respectively, who were appointed ministers.

    President lays wreath at statue of the late President Makarios

    Nicosia, Mar 1 (CNA) President Tassos Papadopoulos laid a wreath today at the statue of the late President of the Republic Archbishop Makarios III, after the newly appointed members of his cabinet were sworn in, at a special ceremony at the Presidential Palace.

    The cabinet is currently holding its first informal session.

    Nicosia, Mar 1 (CNA) The first official meeting of the Council of Ministers will be held next Friday, President of the Republic, Tassos Papadopoulos announced here Saturday, adding that he will ask the ministers to set out their priorities and plans which will be discussed at the Council.

    Speaking to reporters before the affirmation ceremony of his cabinet, President Papadopoulos also said the completion of the islands accession to the European Union (EU) will take place, independent of developments on the Cyprus problem.

    Nicosia, Mar 1 (CNA) Cyprus President Tassos Papadooulos has asked the members of his cabinet to work in concert and present to him at Friday's first formal cabinet meeting a list of priorities with regard to work that needs to be done, stressing that they will be judged by what they achieve and not by matters of protocol.

    Nicosia, Mar 1 (CNA) President Tassos Papadopoulos received the congratulations of the diplomatic corps here Saturday at the Presidential Palace.

    Together with First Lady Fotini, Foreign Minister George Iacovou and his wife, the new President was congratulated by diplomats based in Nicosia.

    Later Saturday, President Papadopoulos will be congratulated by dignitaries of the Republic while on Sunday, the Presidential Palace will be open from 1500-1800 local time (1300-1600 GMT) for the public to congratulate the islands new President.

    Iacovou: US wish for referenda on Annan plan

    Nicosia, Mar 1 (CNA) US State Department Coordinator for Cyprus, Thomas Weston, expressed the wish that the third UN Secretary-Generals plan for a Cyprus settlement will eventually be put to separate and simultaneous referenda for approval, Foreign Minister, George Iacovou said.

    Speaking after his meeting here Saturday with Weston, Iacovou, who was sworn in this morning said the meeting was formal and for the two to get to know each other.
