UN receives over 1,000 entries for new flag, anthem

Nicosia, Feb 18 (CNA) -- Well over 1,000 entries have been submitted to the UN for the composition of a new anthem and the design of a new flag for Cyprus, to be in place when there is a political settlement here, UN press spokesman Brian Kelly has said.

Kelly said entries have come from all over the world, as far away as Australia, Canada and Norway, and UN personnel are still cataloguing and registering entries.

''We have received entries from 15 countries, Cyprus, Turkey and Greece included, from schools, individuals and design firms, some of which are multiple entries,'' Kelly told CNA today, a day after the deadline for submissions ended.

One entry is from a child in Cyprus, whose father is a Greek Cypriot and mother is a Turkish Cypriot.

''UN personnel have been cataloguing and registering entries, some people were up until 3.30 this morning. We hope to finish registration within the next 48 hours,'' Kelly said.

This, he explained, will enable the two bicommunal committees that are to be set up, with members nominated by the leaders of the two communities, to examine all the entries and make recommendations to their respective leader.

Kelly did not want to go into details on how many entries have arrived from the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot side.

He said more information will probably be released on completion of the count and after consultation with the committees to be established.

The UN asked for bids for Cyprus' new flag and anthem about a month ago in the context of a UN peace plan for a comprehensive settlement that the two sides are negotiating.

The plan provides for a negotiated settlement to be signed by the end of the month. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will visit Turkey, Greece and Cyprus next week in a bid to accelerate the peace process and possibly conclude a deal on his peace proposal.

Turkish premier ''knows'' of new UN plan

Nicosia, Feb 18 (CNA) -- Turkey's Prime Minister Abdullah Gul has said he is aware of the existence of a new UN peace plan for a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus.

''We are all trying to solve the problem, there is a good chance for that. Secretary General Annan is coming to Turkey next week. We know that he has another plan, something we hope will be to the satisfaction of both sides,'' Gul told a press conference yesterday in Brussels.

Nicosia, Feb 18 (CNA) -- The winner of last Sunday's presidential elections, Tassos Papadopoulos, will be sworn in as the next President of the Cyprus Republic on Friday, 28 February, at 1600 at a special session of the House of Representatives.

Kostakis Christoforou, the Director General of the House of Representatives, told CNA that according to the Constitution a special House session will be held on the day the term of office of incumbent President Glafcos Clerides expires.

Simitis praises Clerides for his work on Cyprus, EU accession

Brussels, Feb 18 (CNA) Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis congratulated outgoing President Glafcos Clerides for his handling on the islands accession course and the peace process for a Cyprus settlement.

The two met in Brussels here Tuesday, together with the foreign ministers of both countries.

Speaking before the meeting, the Greek Premier and President of the European Council, Simitis, congratulated Clerides for his handling regarding the accession procedure and efforts to solve the Cyprus problem. He also expressed admiration for Clerides work as well as appreciation for his personality.

Cox still hopes for a single Cyprus to enter the EU

Brussels, Feb 18 (CNA) - European Parliament President, Pat Cox said he still hoped that a single Cyprus would sign the Accession Treaty.

He was speaking after meeting outgoing President Glafcos Clerides, whom he thanked for his consistent determined commitment for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

We still earnestly hope that a single Cyprus will sign the Accession Treaty but of course we fully understand that on the 16 of April Cyprus will sign but the question is which Cyprus. But that is a question for the Cypriots to decide, he said.

Referring to his meeting with Clerides, Cox said he had the chance personally to thank him for the consistently determined commitment which has brought us to look for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

The European Parliament President said he had the opportunity to learn from Clerides his appreciation of what the possibilities are in the coming weeks and wish him well in going forward.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 percent of the islands territory.

Efforts are underway to find a comprehensive settlement based on the UN Secretary Generals plan, by the end of the month.

Hannay says Papadopoulos' statements are positive

Nicosia, Feb 18 (CNA) British envoy for Cyprus, Lord David Hannay said statements made by President-elect, Tassos Papadopoulos that he will negotiate on the basis of the UN plan are positive.

In an interview yesterday with BBC TV World Service, Lord Hannay said that from what he gathers, he (Papadopoulos) intends to work extremely close with President (Glafcos) Clerides in the next two weeks, adding lets see where we can get to.

When asked if there is still time to come to some sort of agreement, the British envoy said, I think it can be done, yes.

He explained that these negotiations have been going on for more than three years now and that the ground has thus been very, well prepared but of course there are still gaps and thats why Kofi Annan is going to come to the island.

UN to announce this week resumption of direct talks, says Papadopoulos

Nicosia, Feb 18 (CNA) UN Secretary Generals Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, will announce this week the date of the resumption of the direct talks, President-elect Tassos Papadopoulos said here today.

He pointed out that the members of the new negotiating team of the Greek Cypriot side would be announced once the talks resume.

Papadopoulos announced that his meetings tomorrow with de Soto are a continuation of their meeting on Monday.

Invited to comment on statements made by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash that for the talks to resume Papadopoulos will have to abandon his dream of Greek Cypriots returning to the Karpass peninsula, the newly elected president said Denktash maintains the same attitude.
