    Simitis says Denktashs stance makes solution difficult

    Nicosia, Jan 31 (CNA) -- Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis said it would be extremely difficult for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem by the end of February because of Turkish Cypriot leader Denktashs intransigent stance.

    Referring to the Cyprus problem during Thursdays cabinet meeting, Simitis said UN Secretary-Generals Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, and the UN have a feeling that a deadlock has been created and are considering a change in the procedure.

    Verheugen calls on Denktash to listen to Turkish Cypriots

    Constantinople, Jan 31 (CNA) -- EU Enlargement Commissioner, Gunter Verheugen, has called on Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to listen to the voices of the Turkish Cypriots for a united Cyprus, member of the European Union.

    His (Denktash's) effort to win time will not yield results. He will not achieve anything, Verheugen said speaking to the Turkish NTV television network.

    I suggest he takes into consideration (Recep Tayip) Erdogans and the UN Secretary-Generals recommendations. Both suggested to Mr. Denktash not to ignore the voice of the people, he must listen to it, Verheugen said.

    Brussels, Jan 31 (CNA) -- Cyprus will receive 52,8 million Euros during the distribution of the Cohesion Fund and Structural Fund commitment appropriations for the new ten member states between 2004 and 2006, according to the Second Progress report on Economic and social cohesion.

    Nicosia, Jan 31 (CNA) -- The Republic of Cyprus has initialled the agreement on the Single European Sky, expressing its readiness to respond to the obligations arising from the agreement, which will come into effect in the autumn of 2003.

    An official press release said Cyprus Permanent Representative to the European Union, Ambassador Theofilos Theofilou, and the Director of the Air Transport Directorate, Michel Ayral, initialled the agreement in the presence of other EU and Cypriot officials.

    PACE report indicates violations of enclaved people's human rights

    Nicosia, Jan 31 (CNA) -- The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), in a draft report, expresses serious concern that the island of Cyprus continues to be rigorously and arbitrarily divided and that the Greek Cypriot and Maronite enclaved communities suffer serious human rights violations.

    The report, entitled Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Greek Cypriots and Maronites living in the northern part of Cyprus, notes that a general settlement of the Cyprus conflict "should never be at the expense of the communities that have opted to continue to live there where they have always resided.

    Nicosia, Jan 31, (CNA) -- The Greek Cypriot side, during today's meeting between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, in the context of the UN-led peace talks, submitted a non-paper, by which it replies to the positions of the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash on a UN peace plan.

    A source close to the talks told CNA that during today's meeting, which lasted for about two hours and fifteen minutes, Clerides concluded its comments on the Turkish Cypriot side's remarks on the UN Secretary General Kofi Annna's peace plan.

    Talks to continue even after February, say Papadopoulos, Izcan

    Nicosia, Jan 31 (CNA) The talks on the basis of the UN Secretary Generals plan for a Cyprus settlement should continue, even if no solution is achieved by the end of February, leaders of the Greek Cypriot Democratic Party and the Turkish Cypriot United Cyprus party said.

    Democratic Party leader Tassos Papadopoulos said he discussed with UC Party General Secretary, Izzet Izcan the prospects of the ongoing UN-led direct talks and conveyed the wish of both sides for a solution to the Cyprus problem and to continue the negotiations based on the UN Secretary General's plan.

    Constantinople, Jan 31 (CNA)-- The Cyprus question was among the core issues discussed here today between the EU Troika and the Turkish Foreign Minister Yasar Yiakis.

    Referring to the Cyprus problem and the Grecoturkish relations, Greek Foreign Minister and President of the European Council of Ministers George Papandreou pointed out that finding solutions will be beneficial not only for Greece and Turkey and but also for the latter's European prospect.

    Papandreou was addressing a joint conference following the EU Troika meeting in Ankara.

    Constantinople, Jan 31 (CNA) -- Cyprus will join the European Union on May 2004 and nothing is going to change that, EU Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen said in Ankara and called on the Turkish Cypriot leadership to listen to the Turkish Cypriots.

    Verheugen expressed the belief that UN Secretary General's plan for Cyprus is the best ever submitted and pointed out that there will not be a better plan.
