    President: UN envoy talked about flag and anthem

    Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides has stepped in to clarify some of the issues regarding a UN announcement that the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides have authorized the UN to ask for bids for a flag and anthem for Cyprus, as provided in a peace plan Kofi Annan has presented them with.

    ''UN Secretary General's special adviser Alvaro de Soto has raised the issue of a flag and an anthem in the context of preparations'' should a political settlement be reached, the President told CNA on Saturday.

    British envoy in occupied Cyprus for contacts

    Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) -- Lord David Hannay, Britain's special representative for Cyprus currently visiting the island, is having contacts in the Turkish occupied areas today.

    He is meeting party leaders, mainly from the opposition, Ergun Olgun, aide to Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to the ongoing UN-led peace talks and the chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce Ali Erel.

    UN may produce new pece plan, says Foreign Minister

    Limassol, Jan 26 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has not ruled out the possibility that the UN may put forward a second revised peace plan, as they are trying to find a negotiated settlement by the end of February.

    The minister said that the international community is expected to increase its pressure, mainly on the Turkish Cypriot side, and noted that if this year does not lead to a solution, it will lead to division.

    Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) -- Marcos Baghdadis, Cyprus' junior tennis champion, has won the Australian Open junior tennis championship.
