    Cyprus ratifies anti-personnel landmine convention

    United Nations, Jan 18 (CNA) - The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN, Ambassador Sotos Zackheos, deposited yesterday at the UN Office of Legal Affairs, the Instrument of Ratification of the Ottawa Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Landmines and on their Destruction, signed by the President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides.

    In his brief address, Zackheos noted that the ratification of the Ottawa Convention highlights the desire of the Cyprus government for peace and reconciliation in Cyprus and sends a message to the Turkish Cypriot community, which has, during recent demonstrations, clearly expressed its hope for a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus problem and prosperity within a united Europe.

    Ballot paper goes to press

    Nicosia, Jan 18 (CNA) - The ballot paper for next month's presidential elections was finalised this morning at the government press, where half a million ballot papers will be printed in batches of five thousand.

    Chief Returning Officer Kyriakos Triantafyllides, who visited the government press today, said a meeting was held this morning at the Ministry of the Interior, attended by representatives of the presidential candidates. He said they discussed certain changes to the ballot papers, such as typing errors.

    Triantafyllides noted that the ballot papers would be printed in batches of five thousand on special safety paper, which has the same characteristics as that of bank notes.

    Nicosia, Jan 18 (CNA) - Cyprus, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria are expected to sign on February 4 in Nicosia a protocol to create a regional European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol) office to manage air transport.
