House approves state budget

Nicosia, Jan 11 (CNA) -- The House of Representatives approved late last night the state budget for 2003, with 29 votes in favour and 2 votes against. 23 deputies abstained from the vote.

After a three-day debate before the House plenary, the ''yes'' votes came from right-wing ruling Democratic Rally (DISI) and the United Democrats movement (EDI) which backs the government, centre Democratic Party (DIKO), and the Struggling Democratic Movement (ADIK).

The ''no'' votes came from the right-wing New Horizons and the Ecologists - Environmentalists Movement. The main opposition left-wing party AKEL and the Social Democrats Movement (KISOS) abstained.

Nicosia, Jan 11 (CNA) -- The Supreme Council of the ruling Democratic Rally (DISI) voted by an overwhelming majority to back the candidacy of Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides for next month's presidential elections.
