Cyprus would facilitate interviews of Iraqi scientists

Nicosia, Dec 28 (CNA) -- Cyprus has no problem in providing further facilities to the UN Iraqi weapons inspectors team, already working out of the island, to interview Iraqi scientists, provided the scientists do not remain in Cyprus on a permanent basis, a senior government source told CÍÁ today.

Hiro Ueki, press spokesman for the UN Monitoring Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) which has offices in Cyprus, told CÍÁ that the Commission is looking into the modalities of interviewing the scientists outside Iraq.

The comments came in response to US press reports that chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix has been consulting with the US about the prospects of persuading a country near Iraq to provide a site for interviews, housing and security as well as temporary visas for interview subjects and their families.
