Papandreou says messages from Turkish side not encouraging

Copenhagen, Dec 12 (CNA) The messages from the Turkish side are not those expected at the moment, Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou said, adding that there is a tendency on the Turkish side of retracting, which does not allow for optimism for a Cyprus settlement now.

Speaking to Cypriot reporters in Copenhagen after a meeting between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, Papandreou said the solution of the Cyprus problem was one of the three aims of Greece.

The messages from the other side are not the expected ones at this moment, the Greek Minister said, adding that we see a tendency of retracting on the Turkish side and this definitely does not make us very optimistic about a solution, at least at this moment.

Copenhagen, Dec 12 (CNA) -- Leader of Greece's New Democracy Party Constantinos Karamanlis said today that it was ''obvious'' Cyprus should accede to the European Union during the Copenhagen European Council, beginning this afternoon, noting that this should take place irrespective of whether or not the Cyprus problem will be solved.

Copenhagen, Dec 12 (CNA) - President of Cyprus' centre-right Democratic Party, Tassos Papadopoulos, said here today he was certain the Copenhagen European Council decision on Cyprus would be ''clean cut'', noting that European officials he had spoken with did not appear set on including any terms or conditions in the summit's decisions regarding Cyprus.

Weather forecast for Cyprus

Nicosia, Dec 12 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

Friday and Saturday: 13/12/02 to 14/12/02 --------------------

The weather on Friday and Saturday will be mainly fine and relatively cold and dry. Cloud amount is expected to increase by Saturday afternoon.

The wind will prevail Northwest to Northeast light 2 to 3 bf during nightime and genlte to moderate 3 to 4 temporarily over the east part up to fresh 5 bf during day time.

The sea will be slight to moderate but up to rough over the east part.

The temperature will be well below normal and the minimum will range from minus 2 over the mountains to 4 over the coastal area and the maximum from 2 over the mountains to 14 over the coastal areas.

Outllook for Sunday and Monday: 15/12/02 to 16/12/02

Local showers will probable thunderstorms while snow is likely. A small decrease in temperature is expected on Monday.

UN continues to work for Cyprus agreement, says UN envoy

Copenhagen, Dec 12 (CNA) -- The UN continues to work for a comprehensive agreement on Cyprus, which is what the Secretary General has asked the two parties in Cyprus to do, UN Secretary General's special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto told CNA today.

''What we want the two parties to sign is what the Secretary General Kofi Annan has asked them to sign, that is a comprehensive settlement,'' de Soto said, when asked to clarify earlier statements to the press that indicated that a declaration by the two parties, instead of an agreement, might not be ruled out.

Copenhagen, Dec 12 (CNA) Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis and his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul met in Copenhagen today, just a few hours before the European Council convenes to decide on the European Unions enlargement. One of the issues discussed was that of Cyprus, with Simitis saying GrecoTurkish relations could not improve without a settlement, and Gul stressing that the solution to all problems was a European Turkey.

While Gul said he expected a date to commence accession negotiations in 2003, Simitis, whose country will take over the EUs rotating presidency for the first half of next year, said Turkeys date would be in 2004.

Speaking after the meeting, also attended by Turkeys ruling Justice and Development party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Simitis said they talked about the European Council that will decide on the enlargement of the European Union, as well as the progress of the Cyprus situation and the future relations with the EU.

United Nations, Dec 12 (CNA) UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan remains hopeful that the meetings in Copenhagen will produce positive results about Cyprus.

Asked by CNA, if there would be good results from the Copenhagen summit or the parties will have another chance in the future, Secretary General said: ''It is difficult for me to say. The dynamics of these meetings can change very quickly.

Eckhard confirms Annan not to travel to Copenhagen

United Nations, Dec 12 (CNA) -- UN Spokesman Fred Eckhard confirmed here Thursday that Kofi Annan does not plan to go to Copenhagen, verifying earlier reports of the slim chances of securing a Cyprus settlement on the sidelines of the European Council which will decide Cyprus accession to the EU.

Eckhard told reporters during the daily briefing the document that is on the table is really nothing more than a framework agreement for negotiations and that it is not a final settlement.
