    by Nicos Bellos

Brussels, Nov 18 (CNA) European Commission Spokesman Jonathan Faull has said Cyprus accession course is not in any way linked to that of Turkey's, stressing that every country is judged on its own merits.

Simitis: plan is not related to Turkey or Cyprus EU accession course

    by Costas Iordanides

Athens, Nov 18 (CNA) -- Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis said the UN Secretary-Generals plan for a Cyprus settlement is not associated with discussions to give Turkey a date to start accession negotiations with the European Union, or Cyprus accession to the EU.

The Cyprus problem, Cyprus' EU course as well as Turkish-EU relations and Greco-Turkish relations were the focus of today's talks in Athens between Simitis and visiting leader of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), Recep Tayyip Erdogan, winner of the recent elections in Turkey.

The Greek Premier pointed out that a political solution to the Cyprus problem is independent of accession and that Greece will insist Cyprus remains in the first wave of EU enlargement.

Erdogan said the time until the European Council in Copenhagen on December 12, is not sufficient for an agreement on Cyprus.
