    Washington, Nov 14 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has called on the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides to apply courage, vision and determination and seize the chance at this juncture to find a political settlement.

    Australia hopes UN initiative will help settlement

    Nicosia, Nov 14 (CNA) -- Australia has welcomed a UN proposal for a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus and expressed hope that it would help the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides reach a political settlement.

    Canberra reiterated its continuous support for UN efforts to achieve a just and lasting solution that meets the needs of all Cypriots and assured that its envoy on Cyprus remains engaged in the peace effort.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Íïv 14 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 15/11/02 to 16/11/02 -----------------------

    On Friday and Saturday, the weather will be bine and mostly clear. Light to gentle northerly winds will be blowing overnight and during early morning.

    Gentle, at times moderate winds will prevail during afternoon, blowing from the west over Northern and Western areas, but from easterly directions elsewhere.

    The state of sea will be smooth to slight, overnight and during early morning, but generally slight, during the rest of the period.

    Maximum temperature 23-24 C, inland and over coastal areas and 15-16C over the highest mountain areas.

    Minimum temperature around 10C inland, 13C over the coasts and around 8C over the highest mountain areas.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 17/11/02 to 18/11/02 -------------------------------- No change in the weather, but maximum temperature is expected to rise.

    EU group calls on Commission to assess UN plan

    Brussels, Nov 14 (CNA) -- The European Popular Party, the largest political group in the European Parliament, has put forward a proposal to ask the Commission to say whether a UN plan for the solution of the Cyprus question is compatible with European laws and regulations.

    The proposed amendment to a report on EU enlargement was tabled by two Greek Euro MPs and it was adopted unanimously by the group. It will then be submitted to the plenary of the Parliament for consideration at next week's meeting.

    UN weapons inspectors team in Cyprus

    Larnaca, Nov 14 (CNA) -- Eight persons, attached to the UN weapons inspectors team for Iraq, arrived here today and are expected to move on to Baghdad. Another three persons will arrive later today.

    Hans Blix, chief UN inspector, is expected in Cyprus on Sunday afternoon.

    The United Nations Monitoring Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) is to set up a regional office on the island to facilitate travel arrangements for the weapons inspectors to Iraq.

    Another twenty persons are due to arrive in Cyprus by the end of the weekend.

    [08] Commerce Minister optimistic over next year’s arrivals from Britain

    1820:CYPPRESS:08 Commerce Minister optimistic over next years arrivals from Britain By Kyriakos Tsioupras London, Nov 14 (CNA) Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister, Nicos Rolandis appeared optimistic regarding tourist arrivals from Britain in 2003, following contacts at the World Travel Market, which ends here Thursday.

    Rolandis said the government would take additional measures to help boost tourism from Britain as of next year, as well as reducing the fees for departures and landings.

    It is estimated that next year the decrease in tourist arrivals from Britain will range between 11-12 per cent.

    Rolandis met with representatives of Britains biggest tourism organisations, including Thomas Cook, Thomson, First Choice and My Travel which represent around 750 thousand tourists, as well as Cypriot travel organisations, which represent around 350 thousand tourists.
