Limassol, Nov 7 (CNA) -- Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) President, Andreas Kannaouros, has condemned Turkey for preventing freedom of movement for journalists and all citizens of Cyprus, and for persecuting the freedom of the press and freedom of expression in the island's areas occupied by Turkish troops since 1974.

Kannaouros was addressing a conference of the Chartered Institute of Journalists (United Kingdom), meeting in the southern coastal town of Limassol, which opened here Wednesday by its President, Andrew Smith to examine the ''Problems and perils for 21st century journalists.

    Holland supports Cyprus' EU entry

Nicosia, Nov 7 (CNA) -- Holland continues to support the accession of Cyprus to the European Union on the basis of the conclusions of the 1999 Helsinki European Council. At the same time, the Dutch government hopes there will be a solution to the Cyprus problem by the next EU summit in Copenhagen mid December, Bart Jochens, spokesman to the Foreign Minister of the Netherlands Jaap G. De Hopp Scheffer told CNA today.

Jochens confirmed that the Dutch foreign minister sent a letter last week to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, expressing ''broad and further support to his endeavours to find a solution to the Cyprus problem.''

The spokesman said the letter did not contain any particular or specific ideas of his government on how to promote a Cyprus settlement, neither did it include any reference to the plan for a solution which the UN chief is expected to present soon to the parties involved in the Cyprus question.

''The letter was intended simply to support the Secretary-General in his efforts to find a solution. As we come up to Copenhagen, we would like a solution to be found before that,'' Jochens said.

The Dutch official recalled that Cyprus was discussed recently by the Dutch parliament as part of its debate on the enlargement of the EU with the accession of ten new members, ''including Cyprus.''

Clerides: Annan will decide this week on solution plan

Nicosia, Nov 7 (CNA) Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said here Thursday UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan will decide this week whether he will submit a solution plan to the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides.

"The reports we have indicate that this week, Annan will decide whether he will submit a plan or not, President Clerides told reporters.

Asked whether the solution plan will be handed to him by Secretary-Generals Special Advisor, Alvaro de Soto, Clerides said he had no information on that.

Invited to say whether preventive government moves to avert any unpleasant elements in such a plan has yielded any results, the President replied "I have nothing to say on this issue".

The President declined to comment on statements on Cyprus by the winner of Sundays elections in Turkey, leader of the Justice and Development Party, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the fact that Erdogan's frist visit abroad will be to the northern Turkish occupied part of the Republic to "celebrate" the illegal declaration of independence of the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime.

Government regrets Erdogan's visit to occupied areas

Nicosia, Nov 7 (CNA) The government has expressed regret that the first move by the winner of Turkeys elections is to pay an illegal visit to Cyprus' Turkish occupied areas.

Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou also said no early conclusions should be drawn from the initial public statements the leader of the election winner Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made on Cyprus.

''Erdogan's visit to the occupied areas is illegal, it is contrary to UN decisions and to international law and order. I regret that a political leader who is advocating change and progress in his own country, begins his international activities with such a far cry of illegality, Papapetrou said after Thursdays cabinet meeting.

Republic of Cyprus should continue to exist, says UK MP

Nicosia, Nov 7 (CNA) The Republic of Cyprus must continue as it is in relation to the outside world and must not be succeeded in international law, said Labour member of the House of Commons, Andrew Dismore.

Speaking before the House, Dismore said the state of Cyprus was created in 1960 after decolonisation and the Republic of Cyprus joined the UN and the Commonwealth and started the European Union accession process.

That state must not be succeeded in international law, but continue as it is in relation to the outside world, he said, adding that it would be absurd to suggest otherwise so that Cyprus had to reapply to join the UN, the EU and all the international treaties and obligations to which it is party.

Nicosia, Nov 7 (CNA) The Council of Ministers has decided to set up a coordinating body to deal with problems that may arise from granting visas to Russian citizens.

Speaking after today's cabinet meeting, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said the decision was taken in view of Cyprus' accession to the European Union.
