    Government expects Americans to confirm exercises deal

    Nicosia, Oct 25 (CNA) - The government said here Friday it is expecting the US to validate the agreement achieved to postpone all military exercises by Greece, Cyprus and Turkey.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou told CNA that Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou contacted his Cypriot counterpart, Ioannis Kasoulides, and informed him about the agreement.

    Papandreou says exercise deal to consolidate peace and trust

    Brussels, Oct 25 (CNA) - Military exercises in Cyprus, Greece and Turkey scheduled to take place in the coming days, have been called off.

    Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou announced the development during a press conference called by Prime Minister Costas Simitis to announce the Brussels European Council's decision on the bloc's Rapid Reaction Force.

    Papandreou said ''Greece and Turkey, in cooperation with the Cyprus government, agreed to postpone all exercises for now, within the framework of efforts to consolidate a climate of trust and peace in southeast Mediterranean''.

    CNA has learned that Turkey informed Greece today that it agrees with the postponement of its military exercise ''Taurus'' and then Papandreou telephoned Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides in Nicosia where he received the approval of the Cyprus government.
