EU position on Cyprus is clear and unambiguous, says Irish ambassador

    By Maria Myles

Nicosia, Oct 8 (CNA) -- The position of the European Union on Cyprus accession, if there is no political settlement by December, is clear and unambiguous, the Ambassador of the Republic of Ireland in Nicosia John Swift has said, adding that the EU is determined that no third party should have a veto on the application of the government of the Republic of Cyprus.

In an interview with CNA, after a year as resident Ambassador and in view of developments in the accession process and the referendum in Ireland on the Treaty of Nice, the Ambassador also said a political settlement is not only possible but highly desirable in the best interests of the islands two communities.

Swift, whose country is currently a member of the Security Council, said Dublin strongly favours the continuation of the peace talks after December, if no settlement is reached by that time. He believes, however, that because the benefits of an agreement are so obvious, it is still possible to clinch one, even if time is very short.

FM: committees do not imply recognition of illegal regime

Nicosia, Oct 8 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has assured that the creation of two technical committees, in the context of the UN-led direct talks, does not signify any move to recognise the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus.

The Minister's comments came in the wake of criticism from opposition parties here that the two ad hoc committees might offer an opportunity for Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to give legal status to his self-styled regime in the areas of the Republic occupied by Turkey since 1974.
