    Foreign Minister: Denktash's proposal not helpful

    Nicosia, Sep 23 (CNA) -- A Turkish Cypriot proposal on the solution of the Cyprus question is not considered by foreign diplomats as helpful in the effort to break the deadlock in the peace talks, Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has said.

    Speaking on his return from New York, after two weeks of meetings on the sidelines of the General Assembly, he said today's meetings in Athens by the top UN envoy conducting the talks, Alvaro de Soto, are part of his efforts to prepare the ground for a meeting in early October between President Glafcos Clerides, Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

    Central Bank Governor warns of higher inflation

    Nicosia, Sep 23 (CNA) -- Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, Christodoulos Christodoulou, has pointed out that as long as there is an increase in inflation, even though if it estimated to be short-term, the government cannot go ahead and lower interest rates. He said the current accounts balance has increased to 5%.

    He was speaking to reporters before his departure yesterday to London, where Monday he will represent Cyprus at the 2nd Conference of Central Bank Governors of Commonwealth Countries.

    Finland reiterates firm position on Cyprus' EU membership

    Nicosia, Sep 23 (CNA) -- Finland believes that Cyprus will be among the first candidate countries who will be invited to join the European Union at the December summit, Ambassador Pekka Korvenheimo, Helsinki's Cyprus envoy, has said.

    "We had very useful discussions and I was very pleased to confirm the Finnish firm position that we believe that Cyprus will be one of the first members of the EU in Copenhagen," the Ambassador said after a meeting here with Cyprus' chief EU negotiator George Vassiliou.

    Nicosia, Sep 23 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 24/9/2002 to 25/9/2002 ---------------------- The weather will be fine with patchy cloud. Winds will be southwesterly to northwesterly light to moderate and the state of sea slight.

    Maximum temperature: 33 C inland and around 32 C over south coastal areas and 29 C over west coastal areas.

    Minimum temperature: 20 C inland and over west coastal areas and around 21 C over south coastal areas.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 26/9/2002 to 27/9/2002

    No change but small increase in temperature is expected.

    Nicosia, Sep 23 (CNA) Cyprus' chief negotiator in accession talks with the European Union, George Vassiliou, pledged that on December 14, the European Council in Copenhagen would approve Cyprus' accession to the European Union together with the remaining nine candidate member states.

    Athens, Sep 23 (CNA) -- Alvaro de Soto, UN Secretary General's special adviser on Cyprus, believes there is still a distinct possibility to settle the Cyprus problem, in spite of the deep gaps between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides.

    De Soto, who was speaking after a meeting here with Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, said both he and the Secretary General Kofi Annan are convinced differences can be bridged.

    Nicosia, Sep 23 (CNA) - President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides today received the credentials of the new Ambassador of the Czech Republic Martin Vavra, who said that "the prospects of Cyprus' entry into the European Union will be conducive to the resolution of the Cyprus problem".

    Vavra said his country supports "a peaceful, just and lasting solution based on a state of Cyprus with a single sovereignty and international personality and a single citizenship, with its independence and territorial integrity safeguarded, and comprising two politically equal communities as stipulated in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, in a bizonal and bicommunal federation".

    Nicosia, Sep 23 (CNA) - The new Ambassador of the European Commission to Cyprus Adriaan van der Meer presented his credentials to President Glafcos Clerides today, saying that Cyprus' prospective role in EU enlargement will be "instrumental".

    He also reaffirmed commitment to the Helsinki and Seville European Council conclusions and expressed the EU's full support to the UN process and to the initiatives taken by the Secretary General towards a settlement of the Cyprus issue.

    Nicosia, Sep 23 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides today received the credentials of the new Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Cyprus, Maximiliaan Gevers, who said his country has taken an active interest in the overall evolution of the political situation in the region of the Eastern Mediterranean.

    Presenting his credentials, Gevers said "an undivided Cyprus would ensure security and prosperity to all and thus contribute an important element to this stability" and noted that "the more the accession of the Republic of Cyprus to the European Union comes near, the more it is important that the negotiations on a solution of the problem of Cyprus come to an equitable, viable and fruitful solution".

    Strasbourg, Sep 23 (CNA)-- The President of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) Peter Schieder said the Assembly would deal with the issue of Turkey's reluctance to execute judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) after the Turkish elections that will take place in November.

    Asked here today by CNA, during a press conference, how the Assembly is planning to proceed in order to convince Turkey to implement the decisions of the ECHR, Schieder said that the Turkish Minister of Justice "had the willingness to come here on Monday and present his opinion and come during his stay here in a dialogue with us."
