    Foreign Ministers of Jordan, Malta urge for Cyprus settlement

    United Nations, Sep 16 (CNA) -- The Foreign Ministers of Jordan and Malta have called for an early settlement to the Cyprus problem in references to the issue in their speeches before the 57th session of the UN General Assembly.

    Jordans Foreign Minister, Dr. Marwan Muasher, said "we also encourage the effort by the two sides in Cyprus to reach a just and peaceful solution of the Cyprus question."

    In the extract on Cyprus, Maltese Foreign Minister Dr Joe Borg said "an issue which continues to persist in the Mediterranean is the situation in Cyprus which has remained a cause of concern for over 25 years".

    Borg, who was in Cyprus accompanying Malta's President Guido de Marco last week, said "we earnestly augur that an early settlement of the Cyprus question will be found and reiterate full support for the effort to find a solution on the basis of the relevant Security Council resolutions".

    United Nations, Sep 16 (CNA) -- Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou has called on Turkey to respect United Nations resolutions on Cyprus, in his address before the UN General Assembly's 57th session.

    Papandreou said relations between Greece and Turkey are "sorely tested" on the Cyprus issue, and remarked about the compelling need to find a Cyprus settlement before the island's European Union (EU) accession, stressing however that if this is not achieved, then the Republic of Cyprus will nevertheless enter.

    New York, Sep 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides is meeting Islamic diplomats in an effort to avert any unpleasant documents on the Cyprus problem during the Islamic conference here.

    Kasoulides held yesterday a working lunch with Permanent Representatives of Islamic countries to the UN and Monday he will hold a working dinner with another group of representatives of Islamic countries.

    Nicosia, Sep 16 (CNA) -- Developments in the Cyprus problem, following the Paris meeting between UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash early September and their imminent meeting again in early October was the main issue discussed during a meeting between Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and British envoy for Cyprus, Lord David Hannay, in New York.

    Nicosia, Sep 16 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou has confirmed that Democratic Rally President Nicos Anastasiades submitted a proposal to the National Council, suggesting the creation of a national unity government or a government that is widely accepted.

    The Spokesman said this proposal was not discussed during today's meeting and that President Glafcos Clerides, who presides over the National Council, will wait for the reaction of the political parties before responding.

    National Council examines Turkish reaction scenarios

    Nicosia, Sep 16 (CNA) - All possible scenarios regarding the reaction of the Turkish side in the event that Cyprus accedes to the European Union prior to a solution to the Cyprus problem, have been evaluated by the National Council, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

    Speaking after a National Council meeting this morning, Papapetrou said that the President elaborated on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, including recent visits to the island by foreign envoys, a document submitted by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash during the UN-led direct talks, and the September 6 meeting in Paris between UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, President Glafcos Clerides and Denktash.

    United Nations, Sep 16 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has pointed out to Turkish Foreign Minister Sukru Sina Gurel that the Cyprus peace process must take place in a spirit of give and take.

    A UN official, who requested anonimity, told CNA that Kofi Annan and Mr. Gurel talked about Iraq and Cyprus.

    The Secretary General briefed the Turkish Foreign Minister about his meetings in Paris on September 6 with the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, whom he expects to meet with again in New York, the 3nd and 4th of October.
