    Maltese President concludes state visit

    Larnaca, Sep 11 (CNA) -- The President of Malta Guido de Marco left Cyprus today after a three-day state visit here, during which he signed cooperation agreements on investment and merchant shipping.

    Finance Minister Takis Klerides, who is acting Foreign Minister, bid farewell to de Marco. A guard of honour presented arms to the Maltese President as he approached the Cyprus Airways aircraft, walking on a red carpet to board the plane.

    Washington, Sep 11 (CNA) -- The latest UN efforts to resolve the Cyprus question were the focus at a working dinner last night, attended by Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and US Congressmen.

    Papandreou told the Congressmen that it is very important to solve the Cyprus question prior to the country's accession to the European Union, pledging his full support in this effort.

    EU Commissioner: late but not too late for a solution

    Brussels, Sep 11 (CNA) -- There is still time to find a negotiated settlement in Cyprus, European Commissioner for enlargement Gunter Verheugen has said, calling on Turkey to undertake initiatives after its November general elections and contribute to the resolution of the problem.

    Verheugen said that last minute elements of an agreement in Cyprus can be incorporated in the accession treaty, stressing that the country as an EU member must speak with one voice and have such structures that would allow the decision taking process to work smoothly.

    Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) -- Local media, printed and electronic, political parties and organisations are marking today's first anniversary of the tragic events exactly one year ago with special programmes and announcements condemning the terrorist attacks against the US and stressing the need for the prevalence of peace.

    The US embassy here is open and working as normal.

    A police spokesman told CNA that heightened security measures have been taken around the US embassy compound to meet any eventuality.

    "We have taken all those measures we consider necessary to fulfill our duty," the spokesman said.

    Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) -- Peace talks between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides resumed here today, in the wake of last week's meetings in Paris between the UN Secretary General and the leaders of the two communities on the island.

    President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash met for about an hour, in the presence of their respective advisers and with Kofi Annan's special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto keeping a watchful eye on what is said and done at the negotiating table.

    Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) The third season of the Troodos Archaeological and Environmental Survey Project (TAESP), was completed with the studying of the relationship between people and their environment from the Neolithic to the Modern period.

    New York, Sep 11 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides has said procedures to solve the Cyprus problem are at the last stage of the window of opportunity, following the meeting of President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash last week in Paris with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who called on the two sides to tackle the matters raised with a sense of urgency.

    Kasoulides, who attended a memorial service in New York for the September 11 victims of the terrorist attacks, said he felt it was a duty to represent the Cypriot government "on this ill-fated day for the entire humanity".
