    Maltese President arrives at Presidential Palace

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- Malta's President Guido De Marco arrived at the Presidential Palace Monday morning to hold official talks with President Glafcos Clerides and sign agreements on the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments and on cooperation in merchant shipping.

    The Cypriot President welcomed his Maltese counterpart during an official ceremony where the two proceeded towards their respective flags and the national anthems of both countries were played. The two presidents then inspected a Guard of Honour.

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- Greece's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister have pledged to continue efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem if there is not settlement before the Copenhagen European Council.

    Cyprus and Malta sign agreements

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Malta signed agreements here Monday on the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments and on cooperation in merchant shipping.

    The agreement on investment was signed by Cyprus Finance Minister Takis Klerides and Malta's Foreign Minister Joe Borg while the merchant shipping agreement was signed by Cyprus Minister of Communications and Works Averof Neophytou and Borg.

    The signing ceremony was preceeded by official talks between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and his Maltese counterpart Guido de Marco.

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Ôuesday and Wednesday: 10/09/2002 to 11/09/2002

    The weather will be unstable with local showers and isolated thunderstorms mainly early afternoon. The wind will be Southwest to West light to moderate but strong in and near storms. The maximum temperature will range between (28-31)C. The minimum will range between (18-20)C.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 12/09/2002 to 13/09/2002

    On Thursday some local showers are expected during afternoon while on Friday the weather will be mainly fine with local cloud. The temperature with increase by (1-3)C.

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Malta have excellent relations, which will be further enhanced with both countries' accession to the European Union (EU), pledged here Monday President Glafcos Clerides and his Maltese counterpart, Guido de Marco.

    In statements to journalists following official talks between the two presidents and delegations from both countries, the two leaders praised agreements on the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments and merchant shipping signed here earlier today.

    President hosts state banquet for Maltese President

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus' accession to the European Union will bring political stability, security and cohesion, President Glafcos Clerides has said, adding that EU enlargement will help make the Union a "leading protagonist" in international affairs.

    In his speech at a state banquet in honour of the President of Malta Guido de Marco, President Clerides thanked his guest for the "principled and consistent support" he has given Cyprus in its efforts to end the division of the island and the Turkish occupation of the country's northern areas.

    In his reply, de Guido said that there is a natural affinity between the two countries, adding that Malta has firmly backed a united Cyprus that benefits all the people of the island.
