    Nicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- Cypriot parties from both sides of the divide do want to settle the protracted Cyprus question, Slovak Ambassador here Dusan Rozbora has said as he prepares to chair the last bicommunal meeting of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties before handing over this task to his successor.

    Spokesman: we resume peace talks in a spirit of give and take

    Nicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- The Greek Cypriot side returns to the negotiating table in a spirit of give and take and with a strong desire for compromise, on the basis of decisions the international community has taken with regard to the Cyprus solution, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    Speaking only a day before the resumption of the UN-led direct talks, he said at tomorrow's meeting UN Secretary General's special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto might put forward some suggestions on how to proceed with the talks he has been conducting for the past seven months.

    Papapetrou said he would welcome a new solution plan Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash might submit at Tuesday's meeting, provided it takes into serious consideration the positions that the Greek Cypriot side cannot possibly accept.

    Nicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 27/08/2002 to 28/08/2002

    The weather will be mainly fine with clear nights, while cloud will develop during afternoon probably resulting to some local showers mainly inland and over the mountains. The wind will prevail light catabatic 2 to 3 bf during night time and gentle to moderate sea breezes 3 to 4 bf during day time. The sea will be generally slight to moderate. The temperature will range from 21 to 36 degrees inland, from 21 to 32 over the south and east coastal areas, from 20 to 29 over the west and north coastal areas and from 16 to 26 degrees over the higher mountain areas.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 29/08/2002 to 30/08/2002

    The weather will continue mainly fine. Some patchy cloud are likely to result to a local shower inland during afternoon. The temperature will note a small rise.

    President Clerides urges international community to intervene

    Nicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus expects the international community to intervene more substantially to find a Cyprus settlement before the island's accession to the European Union (EU), President Glafcos Clerides stated here Monday.

    Addressing the 19th conference of the Councils of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) and the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), Clerides assured that if the Turkish side remains intransigent, a non-solution to teh Cyprus problem would not affect the island's accession course.

    The President said he anticipates the completion of the accession negotiations to take place within the set deadline.

    House President calls for pressure on Turkey

    Nicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- House President Demetris Christofias stressed here today that 28 years after the invasion and occupation of the island's northern third, the Cyprus problem remains unresolved and is at a profound deadlock maintained by the intransigence of Ankara and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, who are threatening to finalise the division if the island becomes a member of the European Union.

    Foreign Minister briefs PSEKA - POMAK conference

    Nicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said a Cyprus settlement that would allow a lawful dissolution of the Cyprus Republic would be a "nightmare" and called for vigilance prior to the decision of the European Union Council meeting in Copenhagen, December 2002, which will determine Cyprus' accession to the EU.
