Ankara must help Cyprus solution, says Turkish Cypriot politician

London, Aug 14 (CNA) -- A Turkish Cypriot politician, Mustafa Akinci, has called on Ankara to implement the constitutional reforms it has adopted and help resolve the Cyprus question, if it wants to secure a date for the start of accession negotiations with the European Union.

Cyprus enjoys highest degree of civil liberties and political rights

New York, Aug 14 (CNA) -- A US human rights organisation has said the Republic of Cyprus belongs to the list of countries enjoying the highest degree of civil and political rights and freedoms and notes that press freedom is respected in law and in practice.

On Turkey, the organisation says it is the only "partly free" country in a list of 21 Western European nations and that Ankara's puppet regime in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus suppresses press freedom.

In its annual report, Freedom House, a US-based non-profit human rights organisation, says freedom of speech is respected in the southern government-controlled areas of Cyprus "and a vibrant independent press frequently criticises authorities."

Representations to the UN on violation of Pyla status quo

Nicosia, Aug 14 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has made representations to the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) with regard to fortifications the Turkish occupation army has built in the area of Pyla, which enjoys a special status in that it is a village inhabited by Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

Andreas Pentaras, Colonel with the Defence Ministry, confirm to CNA today that "the Turks have constructed a 15-metre long and 1,5 metre high wall in front of one of their observation posts, on a hill overlooking the village."
