    Nicosia, Aug 8 (CNA) -- Cyprus football champions APOEL of Nicosia have qualified for the Champions League third qualifying round after beating here last night Maribor of Slovenia 4-2.

    Maribor won the first leg at home 2-1 but APOEL won the tie 5-4 on aggregate.

    Airbus hits light pylon at Paphos Airport, no injuries

    Nicosia, Aug 8 (CNA) -- An Airbus330 of the British airline "My Travel" with 358 passengers on board hit last nigth a light pylon during the parking procedure at Paphos International Airport.

    None of the passengers or the crew suffered any injuries but damages at the right wing of the aircraft have been reported.

    Nicosia, Aug 8 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 09/8/2002 to 10/08/2002 --------------------

    The weather on Friday morning will be fine. During afternoon cloud will develop inland and showers are expected over the mountains.

    Sea breeze will be moderate to fresh 4 to 5 and locally strong 6bf over the windword areas during afternoon. The sea will persist moderate but it will become locally up to rough during afternoon.

    The maximum temperature inland will reach 36 degrees while over the southern coastal areas is expected to reach 34 degrees and over the western coastal areas 30. The maximum temperature over the highest peaks of Troodos range will be around 28 degrees Celsius.

    During night the weather will become fine but local mist is expected to form during dawn. The wind will be westerly gentle to moderate 3 locally 4 bf and the sea will be slight to moderate. The minimum temperature inland and over the coastal areas will be around 22 degrees while over the highest peaks of Troodos range will be 20 degrees.

    On Saturday, the weather will be fine with some patchy cloud inland during afternoon. Sea breezes will be moderate to strong 4 to 5 and the state of sea will be generally moderate. The maximum temperature will range from 28 over the highest peaks of Troodos range to 32 over the western coastal areas to 34 over the southern coastal areas and to 37 degrees inland.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 11/8/2002 to 12/8/2002

    On Sunday, the weather will be fine and the temperature is expected to note a rise. Further significant rise is expected on Monday, while the weather will persist fine.

    Turkish Cypriot party leader calls for increased UN role

    Nicosia, Aug 8 (CNA) -- A Turkish Cypriot party leader has urged the UN to play a more active role in the peace effort they are leading with a view at facilitating a comprehensive settlement prior to a decision by the European Union in December on Cyprus' accession.

    Turkish Cypriot journalists jailed for "defamation"

    Nicosia, Aug 8 (CNA) -- An illegal court, in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus, today passed a six-month "jail" sentence against the editor in chief of the main opposition daily and one of his reporters for purportedly defamatory articles against Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    The so-called court said the two defendants will have to pay five billion Turkish pounds (about 30,000 US dollars) if they "commit the same offence afresh."

    About 400 "libel" cases are pending before illegal courts in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus against Levent and other Turkish Cypriot journalists.

    On Wednesday, the illegal court found Levent and Ener "guilty" of "libel" against Denktash, his bogus state, the occupation army and "motherland" Turkey, in an article Ener wrote, entitled "Who is the number one traitor?"

    The article appeared on 29 July 1999, in the Turkish Cypriot daily "Avrupa" which came under attack by the Denktash regime in occupied Cyprus.

    Bank dispute over - Banks to open tomorrow

    Nicosia, Aug 8 (CNA) -- Commercial banks will open tomorrow following the end of a week-long dispute between the Bankers Employers' Association and the bank employees trade union ETYK.

    Mediation by the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance left both sides to the dispute satisfied, after it said that one had violated an existing agreement and the other the code of industrial relations.

    Nicosia, Aug 8 (CNA) -- The Union of Cyprus Journalists has appealed to the UN, the European Union and other international organizations to act decisively to secure the release of two Turkish Cypriot journalists, serving a six-month "jail sentence" in Turkish occupied Cyprus for libel.

    "We condemn and protest very strongly the escalation of fascist measures the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus is applying to strangle every voice of opposition to Turkey's occupation," a Union statement said.

    Hain was speaking to CNA after opening a photo exhibition entitled "Images of a New Europe", at the Mall Galleries, presenting new images of all 13 candidate countries.
