    Washington, Jul 24 (CNA) -- US Ambassador to Greece Tomas Miller has said the Cyprus problem and Greco-Turkish relations are high priority issues for the US government.

    Nicosia, Jul 24 (CNA) -- Cyprus' total imports, as well as the trade deficit increased during the first quarter of 2002, as compared with the respective period of 2001. However, total exports during the period of Jaunuary - March 2002, decreased.

    According to official statistics released here total imports reached 588,4 mn Cyprus pounds, as compared with 582,7 mn in the first quarter of 2001. Total exports valued 124,4 mn pounds compared to 143,9 mn pounds during the January - March 2001. (one Cyprus pound = 1.7 US dollars)

    Spokesman: Cyprus talks go through a difficult period

    Nicosia, Jul 24 (CNA) -- UN-led direct talks on Cyprus are going through a difficult period because both sides remain attached to their different concepts as regards the way of approaching the solution of the Cyprus problem, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou told the press after today's meeting of the National Council (top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus issue).

    He stressed that there can be no breakthrough in the present situation by sharing the distance between these two totally different approaches. "What is needed is a fresh political will by the Turkish side," the Cypriot official underlined.

    Simitis affirms Cyprus' EU accession top priority

    Athens, Jul 24 (CNA) - Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis has stressed that his country's top priority was to secure Cyprus' accession to the European Union.

    In a written message on the 28th anniversary of restoring democracy in Greece (24 July 1974), Simitis said "it is everyone's obligation towards Cyprus to shield the island with its accession to the European Union".

    UEFA asks Cyprus to host Israeli teams' football matches

    Nicosia, Jul 24 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou has confirmed press reports that UEFA has asked Cyprus to host all European matches in which Israeli teams will be playing, adding that the government will reply very soon.

    Papapetrou said "the answer will not be decided on political criteria, meaning that the government considers sports to surpass the limits set by politics and be an element of peace".

    Nicosia, Jul 24 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Antiquities Department will declare the old town of Nicosia an ancient monument, so that excavations within its borders will be supervised substantively and effectively, Director of the Department Sofoklis Hadjisavvas told CNA.

    Maurer: EU enlargement timetable to go on as foreseen

    Nicosia, July 24 (CNA) -- The timetable for EU enlargement will go on as foreseen, Chief EU negotiator with Cyprus Leopold Maurer stressed today, adding that the Laaken and Seville EU Councils have made it clear that the candidate countries will accede to the EU in early 2004.

    The Austrian EU official is on the island with his team to discuss the final stages of the accession negotiations with Cyprus' accession team under Chief Negotiator with the EU George Vassiliou.

    Maurer told reporters that when Austria, Sweden and Finland were at the same pre-accession stage as Cyprus and the other candidate countries, rumours were going round that enlargement might be delayed.

    Nicosia, July 24 (CNA) -- President of Croatia Stjepan Mesic has expressed his support for the reunification of Cyprus as well as for Cypriot President Glafcos Clerides' efforts to solve the island's political problem.

    Receiving the credentials of Cyprus' new Ambassador to Croatia Spyros Epaminondas, who is based in Vienna, Mesic expressed the wish for closer cooperation between Cyprus and Croatia in all fields and emphasised cooperation in the economic field, which he said is very important for his own country.

    Kasoulides says Turkish side still intransigent

    Nicosia, July 24 (CNA) -- Although the Greek Cypriot side has made many compromises for a mutual accepted settlement of the Cyprus problem, the Turkish side remains intransigent and continues to make unacceptable demands, Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides said tonight.

    In a speech he delivered at an event organised in Salonica, Greece, organised by the Cyprus House of Northern Greece, Kasoulides stressed that if the Turkish side continues to be intransigent and to demand "two states" in Cyprus, the prospect for a solution of the Cyprus problem will diminish and the responsibility for this will be on the Turkish side.
