    British MEP demands answers over comments by Lord Hannay

    Nicosia, Jul 2 (CNA) -- British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw should urgently clarify the position of the Labour government on Cyprus, Euro MP Theresa Villiers demands in a letter to Straw.

    Villiers refers to recent statements by British Special Representative for Cyprus Lord David Hannay, who talked about the creation of a new state in Cyprus and the existence of "two peoples" on the island.

    "A common sense understanding of Lord Hannay's statement is that he believes that the state of Cyprus should cease to exist", Villiers notes in her letter, dated 27 June.

    Washington, Jul 2 (CNA) -- Although the target date for reaching an agreement in the Cyprus question by the end of June was not met, the US will continue to remain very active in their efforts to help reach a solution to the Cyprus problem, US State Department's spokesman Richard Boucher said yesterday.

    "The goal of getting some kind of agreement by the end of the month of June was not met," Boucher told his press briefing, adding that the US continues to consider the Cyprus question "a very important issue and one that we want to pursue in conjunction with the United Nations".

    Britain promotes inclusion of its Bases to Ramsar Convention

    Nicosia, Jul 2 (CNA) -- Britain has formally notified UNESCO of its wish to extend the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance to the UK's Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus, which will also involve the designation of the Akrotiri Salt Lake under the Ramsar convention in approximately four months time, a press release of the British High Commission here reads.

    The Commission noted that the extension is just one of several key undertakings fulfilled by the British Government and that these undertakings had been agreed with the Cyprus Republic last year in order to address local concerns about the impact of the Akrotiri antenna, on the environment and health.

    Cyprus Airways receives new Airbus A319

    Nicosia, Jul 2 (CNA) - Cyprus Airways received a new Airbus A319 last night at Larnaca Airport, the second one the company bought. The first was received in April.

    The national air carrier's Press and Public Affairs Director, Tasos Angelis, told CNA that the new airplane has 126 seats, is fully upgraded and will carry out scheduled flights to Greece and Europe.

    Angelis added that "we will rent two new 295-seater Airbus A330," which will carry out scheduled flights to London and other cities in Europe.

    Cyprus - Iran relations develop very well

    Nicosia, Jul 2 (CNA) -- Relations between Cyprus and Iran are developing in a very good way in the political, economic and cultural level, both the President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Kamal Kharrazi, who is paying a two-day official visit to the island, stressed today.

    Christofias and Kharrazi, who met here, told the press that both countries' parliaments were in constant contact and would promote exchange of visits of their delegations, for the benefit of both countries and their peoples.

    "Both countries have a mutual concern for peace in the Eastern Mediterranean, focusing on the need for a just solution of the Palestinian issue and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, and for a peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem and the termination of the Turkish occupation" of Cyprus, the House President said.

    Cyprus and Iran sign agreement of cooperation

    Nicosia, Jul 2 (CNA) - The Republic of Cyprus and the Islamic Republic of Iran signed here today an agreement for cultural, educational and scientific cooperation. The agreement was signed by Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and his Iranian counterpart Kamal Kharrazi, who is currently paying an official visit to Cyprus.

    Speaking after the signing of the agreement, Kharrazi said they have decided to establish a joint committee to look at different possibilities of cooperation both bilaterally and with the wider region.

    Kasoulides said they had "a very fruitful and interesting discussion on issues concerning our bilateral relations, which we see improving steadily and for which we have established now a new pattern to guide us from the stage of excellent relations to the stage of cooperating together, using our geographic respective positions in further cooperation with other countries of the region and beyond".

    Kasoulides said "we have been able to discuss issues of common concern, both regional and international, and I am glad to say that there is convergence of views on many issues."

    Clerides and Denktash wrap up fourth round of talks

    Nicosia, Jul 2 (CNA) - Ôhe fourth round of UN-led direct talks aiming to solve the protracted Cyprus problem was wrapped up today. Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides met here this morning with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    CNA has learned that no particular issue was discussed during today's meeting. The next meeting between Clerides and Denktash will be held on July 16.

    The talks are held in the presence of the UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, who will fly tomorrow to Vienna where he will meet and brief the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on the course of the direct talks.

    Nicosia, Jul 2 (CNA) - House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias today received German Ambassador to Cyprus Peter Wittig, who expressed the steadfast positions of Germany in favour of the reunification of the island, which will have an effective government to the benefit of the whole of the Cyprus people.

    An official press release notes that Wittig expressed hope that a solution to the Cyprus problem would be found soon and that the island would accede to the European Union.

    Kasoulides says not installing antenna would be best

    Nicosia, Jul 2 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides said today that it would be best if the antenna the British Bases intend to erect in the Akrotiri Salt Lake were not to be installed at all.

    He noted however that the Treaty of Establishment, which provides for the presence of British Bases on the island after Cyprus gained its independence from Britain in 1960, weakens the Republic's ability to impose on the Bases what they should do in the areas under their control.

    Kasoulides said he and the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment met this morning with Britain's High Commissioner on the island, Lyn Parker, to express the government's positions on the matter, in the light of a report by an independent team of international experts.
