German Ambassador: painful concessions needed for settlement

    by Maria Myles

Nicosia, Jun 27 (CNA) -- German Ambassador Peter Wittig welcomed the European Union Seville extract on Cyprus, noting that it sets out two important requirements that Cyprus needs to meet as a future member state and makes it clear that the EU does not wish, at this stage of the peace process, to pass judgment on the state of the negotiations.

In an interview with CNA prior to his departure, Ambassador Wittig, who shall remain Germany's special envoy for Cyprus, said the enlargement process has acted as a catalyst on the peace effort and forced Turkey and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to understand that it is irreversible.

He said that the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides will each have to "swallow bitter pills" and "make painful concessions" in order to reach an agreement. But it will be worthwhile, he pointed out.

On Turkey's European aspirations, he said it is up to Ankara, and not the EU, to ensure that its accession course moves ahead, by adopting the necessary reforms and delivering the goods to Brussels.

President: no change in basis of peace talks

Nicosia, Jun 27 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides has stressed that there is no change in the basis on which the UN-led peace talks are taking place, which is the UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus.

The President's comments come in the wake of a public debate about possible discussions in the context of the direct talks of the Belgian constitution, which Clerides is ready to discuss in its entirety and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash selectively.

"The basis of the peace talks does not change at all. If Denktash wants to discuss the Belgian constitutional model, he should be ready to talk about it as a whole, not selectively," the President told journalists Wednesday, replying to questions.
