[01] Cyprus protests increase of Turkish troops in occupied areas1050:CYPPRESS:01Cyprus protests increase of Turkish troops in occupied areas by Apostolis Zoupaniotis United Nations, June 15 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Government has strongly protested the recent reinforcement of Turkish troops, occupying the island's northern third since 1974, with the deployment of approximately 5,500 soldiers in the occupied areas, that raised the number of the Turkish troops to over 40 thousand. In a letter to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Sotos Zackheos said "this action flagrantly violates resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council and of other international organisations, such as the Non-Aligned Movement and the Commonwealth, which call, inter alia, for the withdrawal of the occupation troops from Cyprus". Zacheos called on Annan and members of the Security Council "to undertake the necessary demarches toward the Government of Turkey, so that it will immediately reverse this new fait accompli and put an end to its aggressive policy, which is contrary to the spirit and letter of the United Nations Charter". He added that the Cyprus Government would closely follow the developments on this issue, as well as, the results of these demarches. [03] Mediterranean Greens to draw up Manifesto on Rural Areas1355:CYPPRESS:03Mediterranean Greens to draw up Manifesto on Rural Areas by Emili Lambrou Drousia, PAPHOS, June 15 (CNA) -- Representatives of Green parties from 10 Mediterranean countries meet here, June 14 - 16 to look into the issue of "Regional Development and Rural Areas." The meeting is attended by Greens from Cyprus, Italy, France, Greece, Israel, Turkey, Palestine, Spain, Malta and Portugal. The meeting is organized by the European Federation of Green Parties (EFGP) and Cyprus Ecologists -Environmentalists Movement (Cyprus Green Party) and will address the issues of organic farming and alternative approach to farming, rural areas and sustainability, environment for peace in the Middle East and alternative tourism. Participants will wrap up their deliberations tomorrow by drawing up a Mediterranean Green's Manifesto on Rural Areas in the Mediterranean Area that will be tabled before the European Parliament for approvement. Speaking at the opening ceremony yesterday Secretary General of the EFGP Arnold Cassola said the meeting was "very important" and underlined that farmers in countries like Cyprus and Malta, which have a major tourism industry must be protected. Cassola also said that "environmentalists can work for peace in troubled areas as the Middle East" while referring to the Cyprus problem he noted that the Greens "will work for a solution towards a federal Cyprus" and expressed hope "that a positive solution will be found so that a united Cyprus enters the EU."
