    Nane Annan tours old town of Nicosia

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) - Nane Annan, wife of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, was taken on a tour of the old town of Nicosia, where UNOPS works are being carried out to revitalise the area.

    The UN Chief's wife arrived in Cyprus this afternoon to accompany her husband to East Timor, after he wraps up his visit to the island tomorrow.

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher will pay a one-day working visit to Cyprus on Sunday, 19 May, before leaving for Greece to attend a Mediterranean meeting.

    Denktash optimistic about settlement by June

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) - Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said he is optimistic a settlement of the Cyprus problem will be reached by June and noted he still hopes the Greek Cypriot side "will realise they are not our government".

    Speaking after a meeting this afternoon with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, in the Turkish-occupied part of Nicosia, Denktash said "we exchanged views", noting that Annan did not bring any papers, but "discussed the Cyprus problem in depth".

    Invited to say whether the UN Chief exercised any pressure, Denktash said "no". Asked if he was happy from what he heard from Annan, the Turkish Cypriot leader said "I am always happy when I hear anybody".

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- President of the European Parliament Pat Cox has asked Euro MP's to join him in sending a message of support and encouragement, and to urge both parties in Cyprus to seize the moment of opportunity and settle the Cyprus problem.

    Peaceful demonstrations to send Annan a message

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) - Refugee and other organisations staged demonstrations today in Nicosia, to pass the message to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan that they want him to exert pressure on Turkey for the reunification of the island and to determine the fate of persons missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island.
