Cyprus talks resume

Nicosia, May 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash resume here this afternoon their direct talks, aimed to solve the Cyprus problem, in the presence of UN Secretary General's Advisor on Cyprus Alvaro De Soto, who returns to the island early in the afternoon.

During a short break of the talks, because of the Orthodox Easter, he had flown to New York where he briefed UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the five UN Security Council Permanent Members and the Council's plenary.

London, May 7 (CNA) -- Britain has welcomed UN-Secretary General Kofi Annan's decision to visit Cyprus in mid May.

British Government officials told CNA that this visit "is aiming to give a greater momentum to the talks so that they can reach something like a breakthrough by June."

Nicosia, May 7 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today that any recording on paper on behalf of the UN of what is said during the direct talks between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to solve the Cyprus problem could not be considered to be any form of agreement.

He said that "in the context of their role and offering their good offices, the UN have not only the right but the obligation at some point to assist the process in any way they deem appropriate".

British Base deny report on Palestinians in exile

Nicosia, May 7 (CNA) -- British Bases in Cyprus have ruled out the possibility of Palestinians in exile to leave Cyprus on board a British aircraft, while the Cyprus Government said it was not aware of such a possibility.

Reuters quoted in Rome a senior government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, that "Italy had gone as fas as blocking its air space to a British aircraft that would have departed from Cyprus with Palestinians."

Cyprus government spokesman Michalis Papapetrou told the press here today that the Cyprus government was not aware of such a possibility and that he was to look into the matter before making further comments.

Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister Nicos Koshis, spoke on the same wave level, saying "we have not been informed regarding any transportation of Palestinians in exile to the British Bases in Cyprus."

Cyprus abides by EU list of terrorist organisations

Nicosia, May 7 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said that Cyprus' policy is to comply with EU decisions. He was referring to Kurdish party PKK, which has been renamed Kadek, being included in the European list of terrorist organisations last week.

He said "Cyprus' position and policy is that it harmonises itself with the positions of the EU" regarding the description of any organisation as terrorist or otherwise, noting that this also applies for "the relevant bank accounts that may exist".

Nicosia, May 7 (CNA) -- Italy's Minister of Community Policies and Integration Rocco Buttiglione said here today he would "bet" Cyprus will be among the first countries to accede to the European Union at the end of 2002, adding that his country fully supports the ongoing UN-led direct talks between the leaders of the two communities on the island aiming at reaching a comprehensive settlement of the protracted Cyprus problem.

In statements to the press after his working lunch with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, Buttiglione, who is in Cyprus for a two-day official visit, said that "the level of cooperation" between the two countries "is very good on all issues".

Nicosia, May 7 (CNA) -- The Kurds living in Cyprus organised here today a march and a rally of protest against the decision by the EU to include PKK in the "list of terrorist organisations."
