Cox will start his visit with a brief meeting with UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto on Wednesday evening and later on he will have a short meeting with the President, before attending a dinner hosted by Clerides. [04] Interior Minister appointed as new Central Bank Governor1225:CYPPRESS:04Interior Minister appointed as new Central Bank Governor Nicosia, May 2 (CNA) -- Christodoulos Christodoulou, until today Minister of Interior, is the new Governor of the Central Bank. The appointment was made by President Glafcos Clerides and was announced after today's cabinet meeting. The new Governor assumes office today for a five-year period. Christodoulou succeeds Afxentis Afxentiou, whose term in office expired on April 30. The new Minister of Interior will be named next Thursday. [10] Christodoulos Christodoulou - CV.....CYPPRESS:..Christodoulos Christodoulou - CV Nicosia, May 2 (CNA) -- The new Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus Christodoulos Christodoulou was born in the village of Avgorou, in Famagusta district, on 13 April, 1939. He finished the Greek Gymnasium of Famagusta 1951 - 57 and the Pedagogical Academy of Cyprus 1960-62. He has a degree from Pantios High School of Political Sciences and the School of Law and Economic Sciences of the Aristotelian University of Salonica and has a doctorate in law from the University of Wales. Christodoulou worked for a short period of time as primary education teacher in 1962 and for four years in the Publications Section of the Public Information Office. In 1968 he was appointed to the post of Director of the Government Printing Office in which he served until 28th February 1985. On 1st March 1985 he was promoted to the post of Permanent Secretary and was posted to the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance where he served until 11 June 1989, when he was transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture and National Resources. On 7 November 1994 he was appointed Minister of Finance, and on 28 February 1998 he was reappointed Minister of Finance following the re-election of Glafcos Clerides to the Presidency. While still at the Gymnasium Christodoulou took an active part in the liberation struggle of EOKA against British colonial rule and was interned without trial as a political detainee. Since 1960 he has been actively engaged in national, social and cultural activities. He has represented Cyprus at many international seminars and meetings abroad. Since 1978 he has been a member of the General Council of the Cyprus Civil Servants Trade Union and from 1980 unti 1985 of the Executive Committee as well. He was also the Chairman of the Branch of Directors of Government Departments from 1982 until 1985. He participated in many committees of the Cyprus Civil Servants Trade Union as well as on special Technical Committees of the Joint Staff Committee such as those for the revision of the Public Service Law and the weaknesses in the Civil Service. Whilst he was Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, Christodoulou was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Industrial Training Authority, of the Cyprus Productivity Centre, of the Higher Technical Institute and of the Philoxenia Hotel. In his capacity as permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance was also member of the Joint Staff committee dealing with the terms and conditions of employment of civil Servants. Christodoulou was representative of the Government of Cyprus on the Governing Body of International Labour Organization from 1985-87 and was a Government delegate to the Annual Sessions of International Labour Conference from 1985-89. As from the date he was transferred to the post of Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Christodoulou was the Chairman of the Executive Board of the Agricultural Research and Extension Council and of other Boards and Committees which function under the Ministry. He was also participating in the Cyprus Delegation to the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization, of the World Food Council and of other regional conferences and meetings of the International Organizations mentioned above and of other Organizations dealing with agriculture and natural resources. He has written many articles and studies on trade union and legal matters.
