    UN to begin clearing Greek Cypriot mines in buffer zone

    Nicosia, Apr 23 (CNA) -- UN experts will begin the long process of clearing invasion-era National Guard minefields from the buffer zone next month after Turkish occupation forces raised no objections, the Cyprus government has confirmed.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said that although Turkish forces rejected a United Nations proposal to rid the entire buffer zone of all mines, they did not object to clearing National Guard minefields.

    "We will proceed with demining in accordance with our unilateral decision to do so," Papapetrou said.

    The government announced last January its intention to dispose of thousands of anti-personnel and anti-tank mines in the 180 km-long,

    Cyprus will join EU based on EU Council decisions, says Pique

    Valencia, Apr 23 (CNA) - Cyprus' accession to the European Union will take place on the basis of EU Council decisions, current Union president, Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Pique, told CNA today.

    He also said that the EU Council decisions on Cyprus' accession are crystal clear and that the Union is encouraging the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to find a political settlement that would allow things to develop smoothly.

    Javier Solana, EU High Representative for foreign and defence policy, said at a joint press conference here that he has nothing to add to what Pique had said.

    Brussels, Apr 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus is among the top countries that European citizens would prefer to join the EU and the only candidate that concentrates the majority for accession in 14 out of 15 member states.

    According to a poll conducted last October - November on behalf of European Commission, the EU member states confirm previous polls, that the majority is in favour of accession of most candidate countries.
