    United Nations, Apr 16 (CNA) -- The UN Secretary General would favour an intervention by the US in the Cyprus peace process and would like to see the talks intensified, Cyprus House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias has said.

    Speaking after a meeting here yesterday with Kofi Annan, Christofias said the UN chief praised President Glafcos Clerides for his stance at the negotiating table and has shown understanding to the views expressed by the House President that there is concern about the lack of progress towards a Cyprus settlement.

    Brussels, Apr 16 (CNA) -- European Union Commissioner, responsible for enlargement, Gunter Verheugen has warned that Turkish Cypriots are running the risk of becoming more isolated, politically and economically, if Cyprus joins the Union, without a prior solution to its political problem.

    New York, Apr 16 (CNA) -- Greek Parliament Speaker Apostolos Kaklamanis has given the most stern warning yet that the Greek legislature will not accept an enlargement of the European Union unless Cyprus is included in it.

    UN meeting on Middle East calls for peace, condemns Israel

    Nicosia, Apr 16 (CNA) -- Despair for the situation in the Palestinian Territories but also hope for what the future could hold as well as condemnation for the Israeli offensive in the West Bank and the Gaza strip were the hallmarks of the opening session here today of a two-day meeting of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People in support of Middle East peace.

    Some 150 delegates representing some 100 countries and international organisations gathered in Cyprus and told a wide audience that there are rays of hope in the midst of all the killing through the Colin Powell's initiative and the Arab League resolution and called on the international community to work for an immediate halt to the Israeli offensive and a return to the negotiating table.

    All speakers, including UN Secretary General Kofi Annan whose message to the meeting was read by his representative, paid tribute to Cyprus' contribution to the convening of the conference and thanked Nicosia for hosting the two-day event.

    UN Meeting on Middle East calls for measures to end the conflict

    Nicosia, Apr 16 (CNA) -- Issues relating to the violations of human rights against the Palestinians and the impact of the closure imposed on them by Israel, were addressed at the afternoon plenary of the UN International Meeting in Support of Middle East Peace that is taking place in Nicosia, with the participation of 150 delegates from 100 countries and organisations.

    Today's speakers have stressed the flagrant violations of human rights against the Palestinians, the impact of the conflict on the Palestinian Authority and its institutions, the destruction of the Palestinian economy, as well as measures that could be taken on the part of the EU and the international community in general in order to exert pressure on Israel to conform with the Geneva Convention.

    The closure imposed by the Israeli authorities has hindered the presence of several Palestinian delegates that were due to participate in the Meeting, among them member of the Palestinian Council Kamal Al-Sharafy.

    by Nicos Bellos Luxembourg, Apr 16 (CNA) - EU enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen has called on both sides in Cyprus to abide by the deadline Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash have determined, for a breakthrough to the protracted Cyprus problem, by June 2002. He also reiterated EU support to the ongoing UN-led direct talks Clerides and Denktash have been engaged in since mid-January 2002.

    Verheugen was speaking at a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem, after the conclusion of today's EU-Turkey Association Council meeting that focused, among other issues, on the Cyprus question.
