Nicosia, Apr 10 (CNA) -- Prominent Cypriot veteran journalist Christakis Katsambas, 77, was honoured here last night at a special ceremony organised by the Cyprus Journalists Union (CJU), in the presence of Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.

In his address President Clerides referred to Katsambas' contribution to Cyprus journalism and the public life in general, mentioning Katsamba's substantive contribution to the improvement of the journalists' status in Cyprus, freedom of the press and rights and freedoms of journalists in difficult times.

Lyssarides: Stop all contacts with Israel's Ambassador

Nicosia, Apr 10 (CNA) -- Honorary President of Cyprus' Social Democrats Movement (KISOS) Vassos Lyssarides has sent a letter to Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides asking the government to stop any contacts and communication with Israel's Ambassador in Nicosia Michael Eligal.

According to a KISOS press release, in his letter Lyssarides asks, at the same time, the government to rescind an existing bilateral agreement on abolishing visas.

Economy on the right track, says Finance Minister

Nicosia, Apr 10 (CNA) -- The Cypriot economy is on the right track and is based on solid foundations, Finance Minister Takis Klerides said here today, adding that it is in a position to meet successfully the challenge the European Union would pose with a specific economic policy programme and the appropriate strategy.

Speaking at a press conference, the Minister said EU accession will have beneficial repercussions on the standard of living of the Cypriots and noted that the local economy is less dependent on tourism now than it has been in the past.

Nicosia, Apr 10 (CNA) -- European Union enlargement, which will include Cyprus, can help end the division of Cyprus, thus setting an example of what enlargement can achieve, British Minister for Europe Peter Hain has said.

He said a political settlement can be achieved this year but that depends on the leaders of the Greek and the Turkish Cypriot communities, engaged in direct peace talks for the past three months under UN auspices.
