President - Others sign book of condolences for former President

Nicosia, Mar 13 (CNA) -- As Cyprus is in mourning for the loss of one of its most distinguished political leaders, Spyros Kyprianou, politicians continue to pay tribute to the man who has left his indelible mark on the island's turbulent history and who led the country in its effort of reconstruction after the 1974 Turkish invasion.

President Glafcos Clerides, House President Demetris Christofias, the primate of the Church of Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos and many politicians from the entire political spectrum, foreign diplomats as well as people from all walks of life signed a book of condolences, which opened today at the House of Representatives where Kyprianou served.

"I am extremely saddened by the death of Spyros Kyprianou, we bid him farewell and we honour his contribution to his country as a foreign minister, House president and President of the Republic," President Clerides wrote in the book of condolences.

Kyprianou died Tuesday of cancer at the age of 69. His funeral, at the state's expense, will take place Thursday at 1.00 pm (11.00 GMT).

Christofias who took over from Kyprianou in June 2001 as House President was the first to sign the book.

He announced that the House is suspending all activities today and tomorrow. He said the House plenary will hold an extraordinary meeting Thursday afternoon after the funeral to honour its former speaker.

"We are deeply distressed by his death. He was a fighter, he always defended his country's interests and fought vigorously for Cyprus' freedom," Christofias said.

Archbishop Chrysostomos said Kyprianou is the man who "really fought right from the start for the freedom of our land from Turkish occupation."

Kyprianou succeeded the late president, Archbishop Makarios III, when he died in August 1977, only three years after Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island's northern areas. Kyprianou served as president for the next decade and saw Cyprus perform what many have since call "an economic miracle" which helped the country get back on its feet after the devastating blow of the invasion.

"We owe sincere gratitude to Kyprianou for all his efforts," Chrysostomos said.

Nicos Anastasiades, leader of the Democratic Rally (DISI), said that Kyprianou paid the political price for his beliefs.

"On many occasions we exchanged bitter words with him but never with bad feelings or intentions. He has proved to us how human, consistent and right he was with his associates, when we cooperated with him in the political arena," he said.

Kyprianou's long time associate honorary leader of the Social Democratic Movement Vassos Lyssarides said "he will stay in our memories as the man who remained faithful to the principles he believed were just and right for a solution of the Cyprus problem."
