    EU Enlargement Commissioner arrives Thursday

    Nicosia, Mar 6 (CNA) -- European Union Commissioner responsible for enlargement Gunter Verheugen arrives here Thursday for what has been described as a very important visit, as UN-led peace talks are taking place with a view to finding a comprehensive settlement before Cyprus accedes to the Union.

    He will meet with President Glafcos Clerides "to discuss the enlargement process and to be briefed on the ongoing UN-led direct talks between the two communities," a press release, issued here today by the delegation of the EU Commission in Nicosia, said.

    Nicosia, Mar 6 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou has welcomed remarks by Turkish Foreign Minister that Ankara has for the first time acknowledged the European Union decision to accept Cyprus in its ranks, with or without a political settlement.

    The spokesman also said that the government has been informed that there is nothing that could block the country's accession, a view that Turkey seems to have finally understood.

    Nicosia, Mar 6 (CNA)---Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today the transfer of authority for search and rescue operations in the area of Cyprus, from Britain to the Republic of Cyprus does not concern the Turkish government.

    He was commenting on an announcement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry which has protested the transfer of authority claiming that it constitutes a clear violation of the 1960 agreements (which established the Republic of Cyprus) as well as violation of the laws and practices of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
