In an interview with CNA on the eve of the resumption of the talks, Markides said that it should become clear by March whether there is any progress, if a June deadline is to be observed with regard to edging closer to a settlement. Speaking at the session House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias said Cyprus' accession course "can and should" act as a catalyst in the efforts to reach a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem. He noted the EU "has a duty to continue exercising its catalytic role and exerting influence upon Ankara and the Turkish Cypriot leadership in order to bend their intransigence".
