    FIFA President arrives in Cyprus tomorrow

    Nicosia, Feb 28 (CNA) -- FIFA President Joseph Blatter arrives here tomorrow for a two-day visit, at the invitation of the Cyprus Football Association (FA). He will be accompanied by the famous French footballer Michel Platini.

    Nicosia, Feb 28 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 1/03/2002 to 2/03/2002

    The weather will be fine and clear. The winds will be northeast to southeast fresh and the sea slight. Temperatures will range from 5 to 20 inland and from 7 to 21 on the coast.

    Outlook on Sunday and Monday: 3/03/2002 to 4/03/2002 Mostly fine. Temperature on the rise.

    Attorney General: radical change of Turkish views needed for progress

    Nicosia, Feb 28 (CNA) -- Unless there is a radical change in the positions of the Turkish side, there cannot be any progress towards a Cyprus settlement at the ongoing UN-led direct talks, Attorney General Alecos Markides has said, expressing "general disappointment" with the current state of affairs.

    In an interview with CNA on the eve of the resumption of the talks, Markides said that it should become clear by March whether there is any progress, if a June deadline is to be observed with regard to edging closer to a settlement.

    Church of Cyprus honors former President Spyros Kyprianou

    Nicosia, Feb 28 (CNA) Former Cyprus President Spyros Kyprianou was awarded today the Grand Gold Medal of Apostle Barnabas, founder of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus.

    Present at the ceremony at the Archbishopric were President Glafcos Clerides, House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias and leaders of political parties.

    House holds special plenary session to mark start of EU Convention

    Nicosia, Feb 28 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides described today's special plenary session of the House of Representatives, to mark the start of the EU Convention on the future of the Union, as an "excellent event to begin informing the public, the Parliament and all of us, on what will or should be the form of a united Europe."

    Speaking at the session House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias said Cyprus' accession course "can and should" act as a catalyst in the efforts to reach a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem. He noted the EU "has a duty to continue exercising its catalytic role and exerting influence upon Ankara and the Turkish Cypriot leadership in order to bend their intransigence".
