    Nicosia, Jan 31 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has described as unhelpful to the current peace effort an illegal visit to the island's Turkish occupied areas by the commander of the Turkish land forces, and called on anyone who is interested in Cyprus, to take heed of the general's provocative statements and act accordingly.

    Nicosia, Jan 31 (CNA) -- Ôhe enlargement process is irreversible and can hardly be understood without Cyprus, first resident Spanish Ambassador to Cyprus Ignacio Garcia Valdecasas said here today, adding that the opening of a Spanish Embassy in Nicosia is "a bet on a reunited Cyprus, on the two communities of the island living together again and giving, each of them, its best for the prosperity and well being" of the island.

    Britain says direct talks are enormously important

    London, Jan 31 (CAN) -- British Minister for Europe Peter Hain reiterated here today his government would prefer a United Cyprus to join the EU but said that if this that will not be possible by the time the Cyprus government concludes its acession negotiations "then it will be entitled to gain membership of the Union just as any other of the applicant states is entitled if it successfully concludes the negotiations."
