    PACE adopts resolution on Cyprus

    Strasbourg, Jan 23 (CNA) -- The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted here yesterday a resolution on the situation in Cyprus, calling upon Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to contribute to the search for a formula that would allow the whole population of Cyprus to benefit from the membership of the EU, declaring that a political agreement between the two sides on the future of the island is possible and desirable before the entry to the EU.

    The resolution, based on the report of Hungarian PACE rapporteur Andras Barsony, notes that the conflict in Cyprus remains one of the most sensitive and most difficult to resolve in Europe, but adds that there is increasing pressure to find a political solution to the dispute as the accession of Cyprus to the European Union draws nearer.

    Strasbourg, Jan 23 (CNA) -- The Parliamentary Assebly of the Council of Europe said here yesterday ample of European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rulings against Turkey had not been implemented and instructed its Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights to confer with the national delegation of Turkey and with the Turkish government and to report to the Assembly, in June 2002 at the latest, on the progress made.

    Trade Union Forum says Denktash torpedoed meeting

    Nicosia, Jan 23 (CNA) - The Standing Coordinating Committee of the All Cyprus Trade Union Forum, comprising Greek and Turkish Cypriot trade unionists, today accused Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash of torpedoing the fourth Forum due to take place in Nicosia February 20 to 22. Denktash continues to prevent the free movement of trade unionists to and from the area occupied by Turkey since 1974.

    Vassiliou to attend negotiators' meeting in Czech Republic

    Nicosia, Jan 23 (CNA) - Cyprus' chief negotiator for accession to the European Union, George Vassiliou, flies to the Czech Republic tomorrow to attend a meeting of the chief negotiators of the Luxembourg group of candidate countries, to take place January 25 to 27.

    The meeting's agenda includes expected developments during the current Spanish presidency of the EU, the negotiation of the remaining open chapters of the acquis communautaire and various economic matters.

    The negotiators will also exchange views on the creation and strengthening of institutions and infrastructure, to better apply the acquis communautaire.

    The Luxembourg group comprises Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Poland and Slovenia.

    Cyprus opened accession negotiations with the EU in 1998 and is considered to be the front-runner among the candidate countries. It has so far provisionally closed 24 out of the 29 acquis chapters.

    Nicosia, Jan 23 (CNA) - The US Embassy in Nicosia has issued a statement saying there should be no controversy over meetings with persons who could help towards a just solution of the Cyprus problem.

    The statement came in response to representations on behalf of the Cyprus government, regarding a US embassy reception hosted in the Turkish-occupied areas of the island.
