    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Dec 27 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 28/12/2001 to 29/12/2001

    The weather will be partly cloudy with local showers and probable thunderstorms. The wind will prevail southwest to west moderate 3 to 4 bf during daytime and west to northwest gentle 3 bf during nightime. The sea will be generally moderate.

    The maximum temperature will range from 14 to 16 degrees C and the minimum temperature will range from 5 to 7 degrees C. The temperature over Troodos mountains will range from 4 to 8 degrees.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 30/12/2001 to 31/12/2001

    The weather on Sunday will be mainly fine. Some local showers are expected on Monday. The temperature is expected to note a further fall.

    Nicosia, Dec 27 (CNA) -- Reserves in Cyprus damns have reached new record levels for December, as 49 million cubic metres of water have so far flowed into the reservoirs, breaking the December 1991 record of 47 million cubic metres. The overall record is still held by January 1989, with 65 million cubic metres of water flowing into dams.

    Cyprus protests violations of its air space

    Nicosia Dec 27 (CNA) -- The government of the Cyprus Republic has protested to international organisations against repeated violations of its air space and the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR) by Turkish military aircraft, on December 24, 25 and 26, 2001.

    According to a Defence Ministry press release, on December 24, a total of 19 Turkish military aircraft violated 13 times Cyprus' national air space and four times the Nicosia FIR.

    On December 25, 10 Turkish military jets violated seven times Cyprus' air space and five times the Nicosia FIR.

    On December 26, a total of 11 Turkish warplanes violated 10 times the Republic's air space and five times the Nicosia FIR.

    Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of its territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.

    Nicosia, Dec 27 (CNA) -- The government trusts its people and believes that any protests against the presence of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in the government controlled areas of the Republic on Saturday night would be within the law.

    This is the first time since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus that Denktash will cross into the southern government controlled areas of Cyprus, following a similar move by President Glafcos Clerides in early December, when he attended a dinner in occupied Nicosia hosted by Denktash at the latter's residence.

    Parties appear skeptical about future prospects on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Dec 27 (CNA) -- Party leaders, speaking only days before a much publicized dinner the President is hosting for the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, appeared rather skeptical today about any positive outcome emerging from Saturday's dinner and next month's start of direct peace talks.

    Party leaders see hardly any change in Turkey's attitude towards Cyprus and are reserved in their judgment about the significance of Saturday's dinner.
