UN top envoy appears hopeful for a solution in six months

Larnaca, Dec 6 (CNA) -- The top UN envoy for Cyprus appeared hopeful today that a political settlement to the long-standing Cyprus question can be found within the next six months.

Speaking on departure, UN Secretary General's special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto referred to "a very auspicious launching of a new phase" and talked about "continuous negotiations" to begin mid January on the island between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

The weather will be cloudy at times with rain and thunderstorms. Probability of snowfalls over Troodos mountains.

Wind: Southernly to Southeastly, strong to near gale later Southwestly fresh to strong.

State of sea: Rough to very rough

Temperature maximum 15C to 17C and minimum 8C to 11C.

Outlook for Sunday and Monday : 9/12/2001 to 10/12/2001

The weather will be partly cloudy at times with showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Wind: Northwestly to Southwestly moderate to strong later Northeastly to Southeasterly moderate.

State of Sea: Moderate Temperature maximum 16C to 18C and minimum 8C to 11C.

Government is cautiously optimistic but warns against euphoria

Nicosia, Dec 6 (CNA) -- The government is "cautiously optimistic" in view of next month's start of direct talks on the future of the divided island of Cyprus but has warned against harbouring great expectations, saying things will become clearer as the dialogue on substantive issues progresses.

[06] Cyprus to sign EU Joint Assessment Paper

Cyprus to sign EU Joint Assessment Paper

Nicosia, Dec 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus will become tomorrow the eighth European Union candidate country to sign an agreement on employment, known as Joint Assessment Paper. The agreement will be signed by EU Employment and Social Affairs Commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou and Cyprus Labour and Social Insurances Minister Andreas Moushioutas.

Speaking after a meeting here with President Glafcos Clerides, Diamantopoulou said the agreement would lead to a cooperation on a permanent basis between the EU and the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance.
