1840:CYPPRESS:01[01] Students protest - Illegal UDINicosia, Nov 15 (CNA) - Greek Cypriot students and pupils have called upon the international community to exert all influence on Turkey and on Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to comply with the UN relevant resolutions on Cyprus and help pave the way for a settlement to the Cyprus problem, as they protested the 18th anniversary since the Turkish Cypriots set up their self-styled regime in Turkish occupied northern part of the island.Students and pupils marched this morning to the Ledra Palace check point in Nicosia, bordering the UN-controlled buffer zone, where they condemned the unilateral declaration of independence (UDI) by the Turkish Cypriots, which the international community considers "legally invalid." CNA/AAR/RM/2001 2020:CYPPRESS:02[02] UN: Pace on Cyprus peace effort seems to be picking upby Maria Myles New York, Nov 15 (CNA) -- The UN appeared optimistically cautious today with regard to moving the Cyprus peace effort forward noting that the pace seems to be picking up."I am aware of the ongoing exchange of letters between His excellency Mr Glafcos Clerides and His excellency Mr Rauf Denktash regarding the possibility of the two meeting face to face", said UN Secretary General Spokesman Fred Eckhard when asked by CNA to comment on reports that President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash would be meeting face to face in the presence of a UN representative. Eckhard said that "we understand that a UN representative would be present." He also noted that "the rapid exchange of letters indicates that the pace seems to be picking up. Lets wait the outcome and hope that it will move the process forward." Asked if the UN regards this meeting, should it take place, within the framework of the good offices mission of the Secretary General the Spokesman said "I would hope that the meeting would stay within the good offices of the Secretary General." Meanwhile the US seems to support a meeting between President Clerides and Denktash if this takes place within the good offices of the Secretary General. A senior US diplomat has told CNA that "we would support such a meeting if this were to take place within the good offices of the Secretary General."
