[02] WCL backs peaceful Cyprus settlement

Nicosia, Nov 5 (CNA) -- The World Confederation of Labour (WCL) has called on the UN to take mandatory measures to restore the independence of Cyprus and secure respect for human and civil rights of its people and urged all parties involved in the peace effort to facilitate a peaceful resolution of the Cyprus problem.

A resolution, adopted unanimously at the 25th WCL congress in Bucharest, stressed the need to safeguard the right of freedom of movement, of association and choice of employer in any part of Cyprus and ensure there is no discrimination due to ethnic origin, religion, colour or sex.

Protesting the continuing Turkish occupation of Cyprus' northern part, participants to the Congress demanded the withdrawal of the occupation troops, the return of refugees to their homes and properties, respect of the independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic and a full investigation into the fate of all persons missing since the 1974 invasion.|
