[02] US State Department - Religious freedom report - Cyprus

Washington, Oct 28 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Government generally respects in practice the right of religious freedom and so does the puppet regime in the Turkish occupied areas of the island, US State Department ascertains in its annual International Religious Freedom Report.

The report said there had been no change in the status of respect for religious freedom during the period it covered and that the generally amicable relationship among religions in society contributed to religious freedom though "there were a few instances of vandalism of unused religious sites."| CNA/DA/MK/KST/2001

[03] Government Spokesman - Cyprus problem

Nicosia, Oct 28 (CAN) -- Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today he was not aware of any fresh UN documents on the Cyprus problem.

Papapetrou who was commenting Turkish Cypriot leader's Rauf Denktash statement that UN General Secretary Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro De Soto was working out a new document, said that the only known most recent UN documents were the non papers tabled by De Soto during the proximity talks, which embarked in December 1999 and were interrupted last year when Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, backed by Ankara, abandoned the talks, declaring them "dead" and demanding recognition of his self-styled regime in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus before he returns to the dialogue.

Papapetrou also recalled UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's statement of November 8, 2000, which included Annan's observations on the elements of a prospective settlement and noted "it is unconceivable for a new UN statement on Cyprus not to be aligned with UN Secretary -General's statement."

Invited to say whether there could be a new basis for the peace talks Papapetrou said that "the basis of the talks and the invitations (for the resumption of the talks) are on the table" and that the issue pending is the acceptance of the UN invitation by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

De Soto chaired five rounds of proximity talks in New York and Geneva during which he presented the two sides with non-papers on the core issues under discussion (constitution, security, territory, refugees-property).
