    [02] President of the European Commission - Cyprus - Official visit

    Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNA) - President of the European Commission (EC) Romano Prodi arrives to Cyprus October 25, on a two - day official visit, accompanied by EU Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen and other EU officials, to hold official talks with the government of the Republic.

    According to the preliminary programme of the visit, the President of the European Commission and his delegation will be unofficially welcomed at Larnaca Airport by Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides. Later on Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides will officially welcome Prodi and his delegation at the Presidential Palace, in Nicosia.

    The ceremony will be followed by the introduction of Cyprus and EU delegations, by their heads President Clerides and Romano Prodi, respectively.

    In the afternoon President of the EC and his aides, including EU Chief Negotiator for Cyprus Leopold Maurer, will visit the House of Representatives where House President Demetris Christofias will welcome them. Prodi will address the members of the Parliament

    Later on the EU delegation will have a meeting with leading personalities of the Cyprus society, organised by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

    President Clerides will give in the evening a reception in honour of the President of the European Commission.

    On Friday, EU officials will hold official talks with a Cypriot delegation headed by President Clerides and comprising former President of the Republic of Cyprus and Chief Negotiator and Coordinator of the Harmonisation Process for Accession of Cyprus to the EU George Vassiliou, Attorney General Alecos Markides, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides, Minister of Finance Takis Klerides, Undersecretary to the President Pantelis Kouros, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Michalis Attalides, Permanent Secretary of the Planning Bureau Panicos Pouros, Permanent Representative of the Republic to the EU, Ambassador Theophilos Theophilou and Director of the office of the President Christos Patsalides.

    The European officials with afterwards give a press conference.

    The meeting with the press will be followed by an official ceremony at the Presedential Palace for seeing off President of the European Commission and his aides.

    According to the draft programme, EU officials will then visit the United Nations Headquarters and the UN patrolled buffer zone, which separates the southern government controlled areas of the Republic from the northern Turkish occupied part of the island.

    Afterwards they will meet a joint Greek Cypriot Turkish Cypriot forum of trade Unions, which promotes cooperation between the two sides on the island.

    This will be followed by a meeting at Nicosia Town Hall with the Mayor of Nicosia Lellos Demetriades, who will accompany the European officials to their visit to the old city of Nicosia and the ceasefire line.

    Prodi and his delegation will depart Friday afternoon from Larnaca Airport.

    [04] FAO - Cyprus Representative - Credentials Committee

    Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNÁ) -- The Republic's Permanent Representative to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), George Poulides, has been elected Chairman of the Credentials Committee of the 31st FAO General Assembly.

    The Committee, which convened its first meeting on October 19, comprises El Salvador, Zimbabwe, the United States, Costa Rica, Cyprus and Finland.

    The Committee will meet to examine credentials on October 29.

    [05] Foreign Minister - Spokesman - Cyprus issue

    Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNA) -- The government expects the US to explain to Turkey that the Cyprus question has not been marginalized because of the ongoing war against terrorism, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said here today, as State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston is due in Ankara today and in Athens and Nicosia later in the week.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou, echoing the minister's comments, said the focal point of Weston's contacts on the Cyprus issue will be the resumption of talks.

    [06] Foreign Minister - Spokesman - Afghan group

    Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus can play a role in various disputes and gain credibility on this count, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said here today, commenting on a meeting of Afghans in exile, members of the "Cyprus initiative", at the weekend in preparation of a meeting in Rome of exiled Afghans with the former king of Afghanistan.

    The minister stressed however that Cyprus has never sought nor does it wish to become the epicenter of attempts to form a government of unity for Afghanistan and a temporary government in exile of the opponents of the Taliban regime.

    [07] Spokesman - EU - Cyprus - Denktash

    Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus expects to be in a list of candidate countries that are expected to conclude first their accession negotiations with the European Union, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today, noting that all indications are that it will be on that list.

    On a different issue, related to EU matters, the spokesman dismissed claims by Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash that Brussels is biased against them and pointed out that the Union and the international community have a common stand on Cyprus' accession prospects.

    [08] Cyprus - Doctors - Afghanistan mission

    Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNA) -- Two Greek Cypriot doctors, members of the local branch of the "Doctors of the World" organization, leave today for Afghanistan to help those in need "irrespective of their political, religious or other origin," a children's surgeon Eleni Theocharous, who will be accompanied by urologist-surgeon Demetris Demetriou, told CNA today.

    "Containers with medical supplies and foodstuff should get from Germany to Afghanistan in the next few days," Theocharous said, adding that the cost of the transportation, estimated at about 20,000 dollars, will be born by the government of Cyprus.

    [09] EU enlargement Commissioner - Cyprus

    Brussels, Oct 22 (CNA) -- European Union Commissioner responsible for enlargement Gunter Verheugen has said that EU enlargement would be inconceivable without Cyprus, primarily because of the position adopted by the Greek parliament, according to the German Sunday paper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.

    He also said that EU membership of a united Cyprus would offer big advantages for Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots, warning at the same time, that time is running out in terms of attempts to find a negotiated settlement of the protracted Cyprus question.
