    [02] US Congresspersons - Cyprus

Washington, Oct 4 (CNA) -- Members of the American Congress have expressed their support to a solution to the Cyprus problem based on UN relevant resolutions, providing for a bizonal, bicommunal federation and underlined the fact Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash had rejected last month UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's invitatios to resume UN-led talks aiming at reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Speaking before the Congress, on the occasion of the 41st anniversary of Cyprus Independence Day (October 1) Democratic Congressman of New York Joseph Crowley and Democratic Congresswoman of New York Carolyn Maloney noted Cyprus was one of the leading candidate nations to join the European Union "in the next round of expansion, in 3 to 4 years" and indicated that the people lining in the government-controlled areas of the island "enjoy one of the world's highest standards of living" whereas "sadly, the people living in the occupied area continue to be mired in poverty." [03] Britain - Cyprus - Famagusta Mayor

Nicosia, Oct 4 (CNA) -- Britain remains committed to working with the UN Secretary General to help achieve a solution to the Cyprus problem and will continue to urge all concerned, including Turkey, to cooperate with him in a flexible and positive manner, British Minister for Europe Peter Hain has said, reiterating his country's deep regret that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash decided not to accept the UN Secretary General's invitation to peace talks on Cyprus in New York last month.

In a replying letter to British MP Andrew George, who had earlier conveyed to him a protest by Andreas Pouyouros, the Mayor of the town of Famagusta, occupied since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island, Hein also said "the UK respects and supports all European Court of Human Rights judgments and expects all members of the Council of Europe, including of course Turkey, to comply with its decisions."
