0930:CYPPRESS:01[01] UN General Assembly - Cyprus Representative - TerrorismNicosia, Oct 3 (CNÁ) -- The solution of the Cyprus problem will restore stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, usher in a new era of Greco-Turkish relations and thus strengthen the anti-terrorist struggle, Cyprus Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sotos Zackheos said yesterday speaking before the fifty-sixth session of the UN General Assembly on "Measures to Eliminate International Terrorism: Report of the Secretary General."Zackheos noted Cyprus fully shares the view of the European Union and others, for the necessity of a global mobilisation against terrorism under the aegis of the United Nations and agrees with the EU on the need for the international community to work in tandem, to prevent and solve regional conflicts, such as the situation in the Middle East and Cyprus and reiterated the Republic's determination to support the universal fight against terrorism, "which is nothing more than an assault on civilisation with the purpose of sowing fear in our collective consciousness." CNA/MK/GP/2001 1400:CYPPRESS:03[03] Cyprus - US - FAANicosia, Oct 3 (CNA) -- The US government appreciates the importance of the continuing cooperation with the government of Cyprus in the effort to protect passengers and commercial aircraft, US embassy spokesman Walter Douglas told CNA today, stressing that FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) directives should not be construed that Cyprus has any problems with its security measures at airports or its efforts to combat terrorism.The comments come in the wake of representations by the Cyprus government to the US administration following press reports that Cyprus is included in FAA lists of suspect countries with regard to terrorist activity. The spokesman refrained from confirming reports that Cyprus is included in such lists. He explained however that countries are on the FAA listing "for various reasons - including for easy travel connections to countries hostile to the US. Cyprus can certainly fit in this category." "Although the FAA does not make public which countries are on its lists, we can say that they include US allies and EU candidate countries," the US embassy spokesman said. He explained that "the FAA provides guidance to US carriers regarding security information and procedures, designed to protect the public against criminal and terrorist acts directed against aircraft," Douglas said. This, he pointed out, "is not to be confused with US government designation of certain governments as supporters of state-sponsored terrorism, nor should the directives of the FAA be construed as implying any problems in Cyprus' own airport security measures or its efforts to combat terrorism." The government of Cyprus is working closely with the US, the EU and others to protect passengers and commercial aircraft, the spokesman said, adding that "you can be assured that we appreciate the importance of this continuing cooperation." CNA MM/GP/2001ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1455:CYPPRESS:04[04] Cyprus - Women - Gathering - Terrorist attacksNicosia, Oct 3 (CNA) -- Cypriot women will gather on Friday, October 5, in Nicosia, to protest against terrorism and violence, express their unwavering solidarity with the families of the innocent victims of the recent terrorist attacks in the US and demand the prevalence of freedom and justice for all.A press release said the gathering under the title "With a Flower and a Candle to Peace", organised by women's organisations, will begin with a pray at Phaneromeni Church led by Archbishop Chrysostomos for the victims of the attacks of September 11, followed by a march of women, who will be carrying lit candles.
